Saw Hud for the first time ever a few days ago. Great flick. Absolute acting clinic by all involved. Didn't know it was based on McMurtrey's first novel. Mofo paints masterpieces on that Western canvas, don't he?

one of my friends actually walked out of it and he's pretty into comics.

i saw the curious case of benjamin button today. the cgi was fucking amazing. the story was a little long but it was well done.

i wish i would've walked out of the day the earth stood still afterwards though. i kept wanting one of the adults in the movie to beat the hell outta jaden smith.

Watched Into the Wild tonight after finishing the book a week ago. Emile Hirsch did a good job portraying the type of person I perceived Chris McCandless to be while reading the book. Not a bad movie, but didn't need to be 2.5 hours.

I saw Gran Torino last night in King of Prussia.

Which I thought was pretty much awesome at the time. In hindsight it is a flawed movie... but definitely enjoyable. The previews are pretty deceptive, though...

It was an adequate film. It wasn't revelatory, it wasn't awe-inspiringly beautiful (Deakins was the cinematographer, btw), and if actors phone in performances, perhaps this wasn't but it wasn't inspired. We've seen these characters before, and I refuse to believe that people are casting Amy Adams for roles still. She plays mousey extremely well, and thats about it. In Doubt, whenever the acting reached a certain level her very noticeable blank look ruined whatever pinnacle her co-star was aspiring to reach. PSH was great, though once again his level of expertise here probably hurt him, since we're used to him displaying a great range. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Streep pretty much has an Oscar nomination. Its not that hard. Its Meryl freakin' Streep. Once again, simply an adequate outing.

FemDerris and I were going to see Ben Buttons yesterday but apparently it's 8 hours long so we ended up seeing this. I'm pretty much with you on most of your comments. It was shot great and it's a straight acting clinic but I'd recommend 5 movies to someone before seeing this.

Although, I came away from it thinking the exact opposite about Amy Adams. I think she will get a Supporting Actress nod for her role. I thought she more than held her own with Streep and Hoff. It's one of those movies that is tailor made for winning actor/actress awards. I just think that these performances are what we've come to expect from Streep and Hoffman that Amy Adams will be the beneficiary from it since she's a relatively new face. Oscar voters are fickle.

Also, the whole issue of "doubt" throughout the movie was a little ham fisted to me. Yeah, I get it, the movie's about doubts. Hell, from the first sermon to the last scene it's made clear where doubt can get you.

Don't get me wrong, it's all done expertly and should be commended but if you're trying to watch all these Oscar buzz flicks, I'd see it last.

This on the other hand was great in a whole different way. I guess seeing this and then seeing Doubt 2 days later probably colored the way I saw Doubt because this was so good.

I'm glad I didn't really know much about it going in.

I think it may have an outside shot at Picture of the Year.

Yeah, I gotta agree. Isn't Hud placed next to every baby born in Texas along with a bottle of BBQ sauce and a set of miniature spurs?

I've had this weird life-long avoidance of black and white films. It's stupid, irrational and embarrassing, but it is what it is. I'm trying to force myself out of the Technicolor coccon in which I have spent the past 42 years.

as someone on another board pointed out, "they both go through multiple hair styles. they both get jobs on boats even though they have no experience. they both narrate their stories with a charming southern accent. they both have pragmatic yet optimistic outlooks on life." and they both have children with childhood sweethearts. but i still didn't think these movies were that closely related. i see how people would walk out comparing the two, though.

i liked it. i only looked at my watch twice. for a 165-minute movie, that's not bad.

To draw parallels is just lazy. It just happens that they both live through "events" but Forrest Gump was a man who was part of extraordinary events, while Benjamin Button simply lived through extraordinary events. Completely different, and the similarities are only skin deep.

Man, what is up with people saying this was long? I mean sure it was 2 and half hours, but are we so caught up in the 90 minute movie that 2 hours is too much. People need to sit and enjoy, and actually observe.
