what were some of your favorite world music releases in 2008?

these comps are easily the best thing i found last year:

Image Image Image

the third one is my favorite and would probably appeal to anyone who digs nuggets-style garage rock and has even a passing interest in world music. some really great fuzzy, funky rock.

the same label put this out:

Image
sir victor uwaifo - guitar boy superstar 1970-1976

and it's pretty damned good, though more in the direction of highlife, while i prefer the funky afrobeat. i'm hoping this means they'll be putting out more single-artist comps in the future. all of these are packaged really well with photos and essays, etc.

these two comps are pretty decent as well, though they don't live up to the great cover shots:

that second one is a remix album of tony allen's lagos no shaking.

Image
seun kuti and egypt 80
much better than anything femi has done to date.

Image
terakaft - akh issudar
i just got this one recently, but it's basically another tuareg band like tinariwen...some great desert blues.

on billy g's rec i checked this out:

it didn't hit me on first listen, but i heard enough in it to keep it and give it some time.

so what else ob's (all 3 of you who might even respond here)? any good things in other parts of the world since i seem to be stuck in africa?

I'm usually a sucker for those Nigerian comps, but didn't find my way to listening to any this year. I had them saved on emusic, but always found something else more interesting.

That Carla Bruni record is decent. I dled it from emusic after I saw her play on the Today show. Unfortunately the record wasn't quite as intimate as that performance. Still though it'll get more spins since I got it so close to the end of 08.

That was my favorite 2008 new release. It didn't really bowl me over at first either so stick with it.

I agree on that Seun Kuti

Image

Lenine - Labiata was in a four way tie for my second favorite album. Its Brazilian rock.

I also liked the following Brazilian albums:

Sonantes - S/T

Gilberto Gil - Banda Larga Cordel

Milton Nascimento & The Jobim Trio - Novas Bossas

Virginia Rodriguez - Recomeço

Lo Borges - Harmonia

Those and the new Lila Downs (which I didn't like) might be the only new world music albums i heard in 2008. I didn't really try to stay up on world music last year like i have in the past.

is there a more offensive mainstream phrase than 'world music?' maybe 'ethnic food.' those are in a league of their own.

Pretty cool, but way to daunting to even approach....

I'm so glad we have this thread.
I got addicted to all the African music blog sites recently, like Analog Africa and Awesome Mixtapes for Africa.
I've been able to get a few of these compilations on sites like that, but this is truly great.

not usually one for live discs, i listened to this quite a bit over the holiday...some of the tracks blow away the studio versions, imo.
Quote:
In the 12 years since Compay Segundo, Ruben Gonzalez and Ibrahim Ferrer came together in Havana at the behest of Ry Cooder to form the core of Buena Vista Social Club, all three old-school Cuban maestros have passed away. Thankfully some of their amazing performances have been preserved, like this triumphant U.S. debut appearance at Carnegie Hall on July 1, 1998, just released as a fabulous two-disc set. New York's big and boomy bastion of American high culture probably isn't the venue best suited to the intimacy of the Buena Vista members' subtle string-bending and vocal interplay, but Jerry Boys does an exemplary job of capturing the action on an emotionally charged night where spontaneous invention was the rule rather than the exception. Gonzalez and Ferrer had been waiting for this moment in the spotlight for some 40 years, and they seized it with the sort of verve their studio recordings only hinted at. It's still a stellar document of a special performance, the likes of which we'll never encounter again.

Tom Zé has a new record out (at least in Brazil).
Estauando a Bossa.

Here's a very descriptive AllMusic review:
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=am ... zwkldhe~T1

But then, most of you knew that I was gonna chime in with that one.
I like it, although it's not as immediate as Estuando O Pagode. We'll see how it grows on me.
