Just thought I'd give them a mention. Trout Mask Replica is, like, substantial man.

I didn't post in that thread because I probably just didn't feel like engaging the topic. But Trout Mask Replica is the worst piece of recorded music ever. It's pretentious and it is truly unlistenable. It's only a means to name drop to make you feel better that you can appreciate something that the modern masses can't and therefore place yourself above them. I really find it hard to imagine that anyone really likes listening to it. It's one step below someone recording themselves shitting into can while beating their dick against the microphone for a "drum sound."

That said. I like Safe as Milk.

i really like the double release of Clear Spot and Spotlight Kid. I also have Ice Cream For Cow and enjoyed what I heard of that... though I think I might have lost it in my Big iPod Debacle in mid-08.

Trout Mask Replica, in my mind, is one of those albums that is more notable for how it influenced music (I can't really see Joan of Arc/Make Believe/etc being who they are without it)... however I can't sit down and listen to it anymore (although there was a period of time when I could.) That said, there are a number of great tracks on the album... "Ella Guru", for example.

And for the record, I'm not a fan either.

This is the dumbest fucking thing I've ever read in my life. I "hate everything" and this album is in my top 3.

Way to drive the point home, kid.

Pretty much.

I was only able to give it a go one time and, all that said, I will probably try to listen to it at least once more, in case I was actually missing something. Although I doubt it.

Well, if it's got a good enough beat to it...

The thing about Captain Beefheart is that he's often treated as if Trout Mask Replica was his only notable accomplishment, and unfortunately many people seem to form their opinions of Captain Beefheart based solely on only a few listens - if even one whole listen - to that album. In fact, Captain Beefheart made some far more accessible records - like the above mentioned Safe as Milk - that are a great mix of soul, rock n' roll, and '60s weirdness.

If someone is really interested in understanding Captain Beefheart at all, they only need to search just a little bit through reviews of his catalog and find a record that they think they'd be interested in. Chances are that just about anyone can find at least one Captain Beefheart song that they like.

That's my two cents on Captain Beefheart.

I've pretty much hated what Beefheart I've heard and listening to a crapload of garbage I can't stand in the hopes of finding that sliver of songs I may like from an artist I mostly don't just doesn't sound worth it to me.

I can't get into Trout Mask Replica either. And the fact that DDD "likes" it says a lot.

Apparently, you can't read. Of course you hate everything and like this. Puts you above all those folks who like everything and hate Trout Mask Replica. One day you'll grow up and realize that you're a cliche despite trying oh so hard not to be one.

Good post, Drinky. Safe As Milk, Clear Spot, The Spotlight Kid, Shiny Beast, and even Lick My Decals Off, Baby are way better starting points for anyone interested in hearing Beefheart.

I've actually become way more accepting of others' bad taste and/or different beliefs than I was in high school, but this board always manages to bring out the worst in me. I think its a mixture of sports love, gay jokes, and occasionally some flat-out utter stupidity.
