When I frist got my car, I realized that it only had a tape deck. I didn't have enough money for a CD player, so I made a bunch of mix tapes. In addition to the obvious (several version of Stones mixes, mainly early, middle and late period ones) and various Live Grateful Dead tapes pilfered from my homie James (Warfield 1980 is a good 'un) I found a mix my friend Matt (aka Sonny Gunz) made for a trip we took to Florida:

Tangled Up in Blue -- Bob Dylan (from Greatest Hits Vol. 3)
I've Never Been to Spain -- Elvis (Live from an Afternoon in the Garden)
American Trilogy (Dixie, Battle Hymn of the Republic, All My Trials) Elvis (Live from an Afternoon in the Garden.
Ghost of Tom Joad - Bruce Springsteen (from Ghost of Tom Joad)
Youngstown -- Bruce Springsteen (from Ghost of Tom Joad)
Does this Bus Stop at 82nd St. -- Bruce Springsteen (from Greetings from Asbury Park)
Lost in the Flood -- Bruce Springsteen (from Greetings from Asbury Park)
Cynthia -- Bruce Springsteen (from Tracks)
Brothers Under the Bridges -- Bruce Springsteen (from Tracks)
Lion's Den -- Bruce Springsteen (from Tracks)
Walt Whitman's Niece -- Wilco and Billy Bragg (written by Woody Guthrie) from Mermaid Avenue
Proud Mary -- Elvis (from An Afternoon in the Garden)
Hurricane -- Bob Dylan (from Greatest Hits Vol.3)
Pancho and Lefty -- Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings (from Willie Nelson Super Hits)
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down -- The Band (from The Last Waltz)
Suspicious Minds -- Elvis (from An Afternoon in the Garden)
Highwaymen -- The Highwaymen (Willie, Waylon, Johnny and Kris from the Highwaymen album)
Red Headed Woman -- Bruce Springsteen (from MTV Plugged)
Up on Cripple Creek -- The Band (from The Last Waltz)
7 Spanish Angels -- Willie Nelson and Ray Charles

What a killer soundtrack for Alabama night driving, and a pleasant memory of a good friend I don't see much any more, and music that I don't listen too enough these days

I went through the same exact thing in GA, and I have to say I can't listen to those mixes without immediately thinking of the kinda trouble i got in down there. You seem to keep to a theme much better than I , though. I've got a soft spot for the Highwaymen, especially "The Road Goes On Forever", but that's a longass story for another thread. That said, cassettes are already sorely missed.

When did you live in GA? Are you from here? I got into muchos trouble as well, but those days are over

Cassette mixes are cool, because as someone said the other day, it's harder to skip ahead. I think this will go into some kind of car rotation.

I lived in Savannah throughout 2000-02. I'm from the PA but decide it'd be a good idea to get back to my southern heritage. It wasn't in Savannah, but that didn't keep me from enjoying the hell out of that town. St. Patrick's day is approaching and I get a little misty with each passing year.

Awesome. People used to give me funny looks when I would listen to Afternoon In The Garden at work.

St. Patrick's will always rmind of my boy Frank, walking around River St., with buttons through his pierced nipples that said "Fuck me I'm Irish"...on anyone lese this would be too gar to even believe, but you just gotta know Frank aka Raz...

That and giant Turkey legs.

There is a lot of GA-Philly connects on this board.

Corey, I have had SO many arguments surrounding this album. Mainly it is:
Random: "I hate Elvis"
Me: "When you dis elvis you did yourself"
Random: " I mean, its so cheesy"
Me: "I will play you An Afternoon in the Garden and you wil change you r mind"
*Puts on album*
Random: "This RULES"

Just reading the liner notes of this album is eye opening. They made dudes like Dylan and John Lennon pay to get in..and Elvis had the balls to to play American Trilogy, which starts with DIXIE in MSG in 1972.

Not A god, THE God.

my favorite memory of St. Patrick's day in Savannah was taking a picture of a bum passed out in his own puke. My flash promptly woke him up to where he raised his head, looked around, and then dropped it right back down into the pile of vomit he was working on. Who says the squares can't be beautiful there.

Damn, this is a real blast from the past. Alas, to prove to Femgar that I could part with old, "useless" shit (and to get her to part with a bunch more, this has moved on to The Montgomery County Landfill ;)

Good mix, though.

That song will ALWAYS remind me of Sonny Gunz.
