The thing about Captain Beefheart is that he's often treated as if Trout Mask Replica was his only notable accomplishment, and unfortunately many people seem to form their opinions of Captain Beefheart based solely on only a few listens - if even one whole listen - to that album. In fact, Captain Beefheart made some far more accessible records - like the above mentioned Safe as Milk - that are a great mix of soul, rock n' roll, and '60s weirdness.

If someone is really interested in understanding Captain Beefheart at all, they only need to search just a little bit through reviews of his catalog and find a record that they think they'd be interested in. Chances are that just about anyone can find at least one Captain Beefheart song that they like.

That's my two cents on Captain Beefheart.


I totally agree with this Drinky. I didn't rant against Beefheart. I really just don't like Trout Mask Replica at all.

I was going to mention how condescending his post was, but I just ignored it, since I was also going to go on a rant about sports love that would probably just sound flat-out stupid.
I guess I should go join the jockocracy and just stop listening to music or involving myself in any artistic endeavor.

So I went looking for some Beefheart albums last night and managed to grab Safe As Milk, Shiny Beast, Lick My Decals Off, Baby, Strictly Personal, The Mirror Man Sessions, Clear Spot and The Spotlight Kid.

I played most of The Mirror Man Sessions last night and I was really surprised how much I liked it. "Tarotplane" is the kind of extended bluesy workout which is definitely all right with me.

Safe as Milk was enjoyable, and surprisingly conventional. I was surprised how many tracks I'd heard before.

I've got Strictly Personal on right now and while it's heading a bit towards some non-linearity I'm liking this as well. Actually I find some of this surprisingly "modern" sounding.

Just finished Lick My Decals Off, Baby and with the exception of "Japan In A Dishpan", which sounded like a gaggle of geese being raped, I like this album as well. "Flash Gordon's Ape" was also a bit of a pressure point, but stayed tolerable enough to keep on. I think these aforementioned tracks were most like those found on Trout Mask, so my reaction is understandable but the rest ,while heavily disjointed at times, was really interesting music. Standout tracks were "Woe-Is-Uh-Me-Bop" and "Petrified Forest".

Up next is listen #2 of Mirror Man Sessions.

Clear Spot is remarkably straightforward swampy, blues rock; it's hard to believe it's the same artist who released Trout Mask.
