radio bort

1. Kirsty MacColl "A New England"

I respected Kirsty, but this cover is indicative of why I never counted myself a fan. She takes the Billy Bragg chestnut and tacks on a shitty '80s production, big drums and that phased guitar effect that makes my nanner turtle, and in the process removes every scrap of feeling from the lyrics. Proves what a great song Billy squeezed out if it's still this listenable. 5/10

2. Hayden "Damn This Feeling"

Yeah, damn this feeling indeed. I hope this mopey fucker got a Wii or a hackeysack or something for Christmas. Cheer up, dick, you can always move west. 3/10

3. Cloud Cult "The Deaf Girl's Song"

Is it me, or is the first line of this song (to wit: "Did you hear about the deaf girl?") unnecessarily cruel and inconsiderate? Whatta buncha bastards. Fuck man, this is another mopefest. It's sooooo beeyooteeful. This is like a "Dust in the Wind" for the swept bangs set. Get fucked get laid, bort. 2/10

4. Old 97s "Jagged"

Now, under your own rules you would have been disqualified a couple songs ago, but I'm a nice guy and figured you should get another chance. This song redeems you a little. A little. 6/10

OH BUT HOLY FUCK WHILE I TYPED THIS THE NEXT SONG WAS BY THE BOGGS YOU SUCK YOU SUCK YOU SUCK.

bort is out.

Always a dangerous scrobbling proposition. I take the time to delete songs out of my last.fm library - especially if I listen to a, say, No Guru mix, because those mixes may net a rare version of, like, GG Allin covering Melanie's "Brand New Key" on harps and glockenspiel, but it'll be from a live bootleg recorded on a radio shack lownoise cassette by a thumbless asthmatic in row 674 of the Echo Dome.

round 1 match

jagged vs. saint

jagged Morphine - Buena : well, i'd love to listen to shit this good all year. great song off a Listmania album. 10/10

saint Nada Surf - Are You Lightning? : I like this band, though they are not one that seek out strongly. more of "if i come across a song i won't skip the track/switch the station kinda band." this is pleasant. 6/10

jagged wins fairly handily. will go on to play the winner of shiv. vs. e-stone

round 1 match

shiv vs. e

shiv The Hives - Tick Tick Boom : yeah it sounds like a song that's used in X Games video games and car commercials, but i'm trying very hard not to hold it against them. not as good as their previous single but still stupid fun. 7/10

e Curtis Mayfield - The Makings of You : Usually live tracks get demerits for some reason or another but this gets a bonus for sounding awesome. great soul stuff that sounds skilled but not at all flashy. also it sounds like the song you'd put on your "in the mood" mix right after white and gaye. 8/10

e-stone very narrowly wins. will go on to face jagged in round 2

round 1 match

rads vs. wench

rads Glavegas - It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry : i like this more now than my first encounter. nice counter melody (i think it's a counter melody in there). those lyrics can really kill a rating though. 6/10

wench little jackie - the world should revolve around me : guilty pleasure? it's this year's "where is the love?" for me. great example of modern pop succeeding based on back-to-the-basics songwriting. 7/10

wenchlette wins. will go on to face winner of harry vs. duckyboy

I won with a song that could have easily appeared on Radcliffe's radio. I like that.

As for Glavegas. I have absolutely no idea who they are and never felt so out-of-the-loop on Obner as I have while reading d's recent thread about their tour.

If I'm on this damn message board so much and lurking more than ever how do I not know who this band is?

round 1 match

dalen vs. f4df

dalen the brother kite - bringing it back home : wow i like this. kinda sounds like the sweet/teenage fanclub stuff i dig. it's good ol' pop/rock, but it's catchy and it's got nice layers of instruments and vocals. hook me up with this. 8/10

f4df townes van zandt - for the sake of the song : i love this song but wife thinks it is boring. this is a live version. good tune and good storytelling. 8/10

quick tie breaker

f4df - amon duul - phallus dei : 20 minutes of weird shit? no thanks. 2/10

dalen benoit pioulard - triggering back : dalen always gives me something new to listen to. interesting rhythm, and while i like the sound of the vocals, it's only hinting at what could be an awesome melody, as opposed to someone like say, andy patridge, whom i could see doing something similar to this, who shoves that awesome melody right in your face. 5/10

dalen wins. will move on to battle the winner of along vs. sanchez

round 1 match

alongwaltz vs. sanchez

alongwaltz the acorn - darcy : i guess this is ok. doesn't completely break the mold as far as i know, but i don't listen to much canadian indie folk. kinda pleasant, kinda wallpapery. 5/10

sanchez lauren hill - doo wop (that thing) : great intro, too bad it doesn't extend for the whole song. as a formula i like "rap pop" or whatever this is supposed to be called. however, 99% have really shitty choruses. this one doesn't even have choruses, just verses of (really god) flows interrupted by various doo wop ooooohs and crew shots and reptitive stuff. 5/10

tie breaker

sanchez asobi seksu - goodbye : i like this band. good indie pop that is dreamy but also nibbles at your ears enough to not lull you to daydreams. 7/10

along dolly parton - jolene : great music on this track. rolls right along but doesn't quite gallop. i'd rate this higher but dolly occaasionally sounds too chimpmunky for my tastes. sheesh, this is a solid 7/10

you fuckers:

alongwaltz Donavan - Catch The Wind : I like donovan but this isn't one of my favorites. this is also a live track. i don't mind the feyness i just wish this was more of a memorable song. 5/10

sanchez St. Vincent - Cool Melody (Andy) : this is pretty cool. i wish there were some vocals to go along with it. kinda reminds me of something 4AD-ish, which is always something good in my book. 6/10

grueling match! sanchez wins and will play dalen in round 2

round 1 match

two guns vs. lego

two guns
Cure - Boys Don't Cry : Good song, similar to my perspective on early U2, i was much too late to the game to recognize their importance. just seems like a great rock/pop and nothing more. 8/10

lego Mr. Bungle - Goodbye Sober Day : unclassifiable (unless "experimental" counts for a genre) and fairly entertaining. the style switching is captivating/jarring but the tempo on this particular track makes it feel like an (albeit warped/fun house) kiddie ride rather than a real roller coaster. 6/10

two guns wins and will go on to face the winner of the other two people who are matched up that i can't remember now.

round 1 match

timmyjoe vs. patrick

timmyjoe The Wrens - Fuzz : ahhh, timmy got hit with the good ol Lastfm gremlin. 0/10...(next song was collective soul which would not have faired that much better)

patrick Beulah - Fooled With The Wrong Guy : My least favorite Beulah album. 4 minute pop songs that just seem too long and too fleshed out. sometimes i don't need this much fat in my indie pop. 4/10

patrick wins and will face twoguns in round 2.

round 1 match

harry vs. duckyboy

harry Vocalia Consort - Giovanni Pierluigui la Palestina - Vergine Bella : i just made a mix of vocal harmony stuff like this. hook me up harry. 8/10

duckyboy Skip James - Drunken Spree : shit this is good stuff too. i've got a soft spot for lo-fi acoustic blues. cool vox, and some kind of rapid/sloppy picking strum stuff that is cool too. 8/10

tie breaker

duckyboy Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man : i like this song slightly more than Catch The Wind. it's funny that on this live song he makes his voice sound all psychedelic. 6/10

harry Porn Sword Tobacco - Do The Astrowaltz : this is like an inch worm crawling across an ocean shore. some sound waves and little else, going nowhere in the span of 3 minutes. 3/10

duckyboy wins and will face wenchlette in round 2
