Yeah, I think if you're gonna spend the money on this thing, the DVD set is a pointless compromise. Blu-ray is the way to go, no doubt about it.

It seems to buy a Blu-Ray player just for this archive and having the feeling the format may go the way of the Laserdisc is absurd.

You think BRD are gonna be the next laserdisc?

[drool]the Neil Young Archives Vol. 1 Trailer[/drool]

I'd say, even though this has been in the works for year, that its timing is definitely a product of the Prairie Wind era. The guy obviously has a massive ego and this is basically something to put out so that the legend lives on past his death. I'm happy to indulge him.

Absolutely, you have to indulge Neil. He's shrewd, crude, puzzling, self-indulgent, etc, etc, but every move is calculated and you just have to submit.

The arena shows were great. I saw 4 in 5 days. I overdid it because he barely changed the shows up at all. I had a great time smoking js in various hockey barns with family and friends, and Uncle Neil.

The setlist is very greatest hits. Further to what you say above, Stu, Neil is evidently in a reflective stage of his career. Don't think prior to this he could have played such a popular set and executed it vitally. The message is a peaceful one. Though Old Black sounds fucking amazing – best guitar ever – and the band is on point. It's a Neil spotlight show, and he was fucking young and awesome.

Yeah, I don't follow. What's gonna take the place of Blu-ray?

I couldn't think of a better piece of hard-format media delivery than Laserdisk. I'm saying I'm not 100% sure that Blu-Ray will become THE media format of 2010 and beyond. It's purely a conservative opinion.

Adam Sandler is the only human fit to cover Neil Young.

All digital formats have shown that they have a limited lifespan. If you're going to spend tons of money on this box set, you might as well get it the way that works best and offers the best experience. Key advantage of Blu-ray IMO (other than higher-res and sound quality): being able to browse the disc without interrupting the music.

Yeah, I don't think the price difference between DVD and BRD is going to be that significant. The difference is minimal on the average disc price, at least up here anyway. Perhaps on a specialty box like this, it might be a bit more, but when you consider the three points Drinky already mentioned, it seems to be a no-brainer for me.

I have to buy a Blue-Ray player for this one boxed set? It's just not worth it to me.

Do you have an HDTV or plan to buy one in the near future? Do you ever buy movies?

If you answered no to one of these, then I guess you're right. it wouldn't be worth it for you.

But then would paying $350 for the set on DVD really be worth it, either?

I *might* have an HDTV in the future, if I can afford one. I don't buy movies, ever. I don't own a massive home stereo system either. I have a Yamaha 5-disc changer, a Yamaha receiver and a DVD player I bought for $25 that works just fine.

For the record, I seriously doubt that I would buy this on Blu-ray myself, and I do have an HDTV and occasionally buy movies (but don't yet own a Blu-ray player). I think if I get this it'll be the download or CD version, assuming those ever materialize.

Ultimately I'd really just want the songs. Everything else would be entertaining at least one time through, but how many times am I really going to watch Journey Through the Past? It won't exactly be easy to get the songs off of a DVD and onto an iPod or whatever.

I would hope that if you buy these sets that you'll have access to download the songs.

While we're waiting, here's a new tune "Fork in the Road" Neil had posted directly to YouTube

He also has a new blog at Huffington Post.

they haven't mentioned any option for portability, which i think is stupid, it should be one of the first things they advertise.

The tune was all right. I kind of cringed with the 'bailout' bit.

No way dude. That's a poignant song if you ask me. It's not gonna change the world but it makes sense in it.

I'm not a big fan of his latter day topical songs, lyrically at least. I don't hate it, I have his two War albums but sometimes I wish for more Sleeps with Angels.

Also something else I was thinking about last night:

Why is Neil Young releasing videos and trailers directly to youtube? It's kind of a shitty, low quality way to communicate directly to the fans, isn't it? After all the railing against compact discs, he's releasing videos or promos for new songs in which he mocks a computer company and their crappy earphones to fucking youtube? Why not some highdef Quicktime or something?

I guess I'm finally getting pissed off at Neil Young and lot of this irritation is due to the dawning realization that after reading and posting about this topic for a long time, it's almost certainly going to be several years until I see his beloved Archives for the following reasons:

1. As the BRD is going to be the format to view this in, I just cannot afford a blu-ray player, nor can I afford the necessary upgrades to integrate it into my current home theatre system.

2. I just cannot afford to spend nearly $400 on a multi-disc box set. And frankly if I could afford the disc player and the set, when the fuck I am going to have time to pour over 10 goddamn blu-ray discs? I barely have time to do anything at home, I'm gonna spend all this money and I'm going to be locked to viewing/listening to all this music to a single format?

Fuck Neil Young.

Yeah, that's pretty much where I am.

(Although I've been enjoying Sugar Mountain and the Dead Man Soundtrack lately.)

Sugar Mountain is really great, and I think that's what annoys me more. If he was to keep releasing gems like that, or the Massey Hall and Fillmore shows I'd ridiculously happy. Those three albums have been some of my favourites over the last five years and I'm assuming now that it's going to stop with all BRD releases.

I think you'd be wrong to assume that. Pretty sure I recall that he's at least got a planned release of a shelved Crazy Horse jazz-leaning record that he hated until now. Then again, I wouldn't put it past Neil to further alienate certain of his audience and leave it at Blu-Ray or bust, but isn't that why we love him?

I just can't believe you uttered "F*ck Neil Young".
