Is Jack worth watching?
RIYL?

I know what to expect from David, a bunch of skitch with Horatio, where he tries to act like Chris Farley.

I like Johnson better than most people here, I think, but he's pretty much cheery, barefoot surf-dude pleasant noodling. Songs are short and catchy, though, with weirder lyrics than you might think.

I assume I'm the biggest Jack Johnson fan here. I've seen him live like 3 times. Been following him since like age 13 or so, before his debut was released. Nothing exciting to watch, but I dig positive vibes.

I think Mos Def should appear at Studio 6 and kick Jack "Mormon Hawaiian Surfer Troubador" Johnson's ass for taking Mos's rock project's name in vain.

Besides, Jack Johnson, cracker <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Black Jack Johnson, muscially and all that.

Well, blame his mom, then. He was born with that name long before Mos Def ever used the boxer's name for his group.

Put on the Thicker Than Water Soundtrack and chill a little.

i think that jack johnson should be dragged out into the street, mouth-plundered and shot for being so boring. i'm sure that he's a very nice man, though.

Heh. Yeah, he's a bit too full of dude-calm for people to cope with and his songs mostly sound alike. The new one changes it up a little bit and lyrically is a little darker, but he's still the barefoot beach Dando that many people want to kill.

One of my friends bought brushfire fairytales for me in an effort to turn me onto something after all the music i turned her onto that she enjoyed. It was really hard to tell her the truth, that jack johnson is boring, talentless hack.

But she still digs him, so he must be doing something right. Just don't ask me what that is.

Oh. Yah. Blame his mama.

You just know that then a black man could never want to put the hurt down, 'cause he wouldn't want to make a mama cry....

Well, so what. Jack Johnson, cracker, could have been a gentleman and deferred to Mos once he would have known Mos wanted to call his rock project Jack Johnson. But, no. Instead of changing his performing name to JJ (maybe adding the year of his birth to the end, making for something like JJ72 as his performing name), he kept on as Jack Johnson.

That is horse-shit, brah.

As to chilling the f' out -- I am calmly enjoying Dear Catastrophe Waitress as of current.

Again, this is sarcasm?... Anyway, why does Ford friggin' Prefect need to verify his rockness with a rock band? Such is axiomatic, dOOdz -- he doesn't need to pretend to like guitars to prove he is the new Black Elvis. Yah yah.

Oh, lordy.

Why should someone defer their given name to someone else, particuarly when Johnson was a well-known surfing champion by the time he was 17?

Why, just because Mos Def has more cred with you, you who have wanted to be a black man since your first post and yet have failed each time? I like Mos Def, but Johnson shouldn't have to defer shit.

You call it horse shit when it's really just your obtuse opinion, brah.

God I'm sick of white people calling me brah.

It's funny the first four hundred times. After that, not so much.

His music is , meh, for me. But, he's made some of the best surfing movies I've ever seen.

The only song I know Jack Johnson for is "The Horizon Has Been Defeated" which I thought was okay, but not nearly good enough to warrant me buying or seeking out anything else by him.

Then this new one with the Sam Roberts artwork comes out and I'm like "pfft, nobody will care" and it starts to sell pretty good at my store. So I'm confused.

Then I saw them on SNL last night. I listened to about thirty seconds and went "Oh. It's Dave Matthews radio rock." and walked out of the room.

Pretty much, yep. A little more folk-blues based but nothing that's gonna set the world on fire. Nothing really to hate either.

I agree, people who hate Jack Johnson and Dave Mathews have too much vitriol in their systems. Harmless, I would term it.

Believe you me, there are things much more worthy of heaping hate on.

It's curious the cross-section of hate Johnson has fomented.

My wife is as far from indie as you can get. Her favorite bands are The Moody Blues, The Doors, B-52's, Blondie, Fleetwood Mac and ELO, but she wants to poke out Johnson's eyes, too.
