do tell....

AC Pitchfork interview Wrote:
Pitchfork: Getting to the new record, I was curious about the title. Of course, everyone knows it's the venue [in Maryland]. I did read that you thought of it more in terms of how the words sounded, not necessarily as a reference to that place.

DP: Well, sort of both ways. I can distinctly remember being in high school and Brian and I sitting on his parents' back porch listening to a Neu! record, the first one. And the second track is this kind of slow song with these intense guitar solos that kind of drift off and one of us was like, "Oh, can't you just picture yourself at Merriweather Post Pavilion? This is so Merriweather." So anything from then on...some epic guitar jam or grandiose became very "Merriweather." It's a word we'd start using, like, "This is so Merriweather."

Pitchfork: Is the new record "Merriweather"?

DP: I don't know. I think we kind of forgot about that and then realized, while doing interviews about it and stuff that we used to say that. [all laugh]. But, no, I think it's more to do with the outside. When we were writing these songs we would record all the practices we were doing before we went on tour, we took 'em back to our friend's place and were listening to them and we were listening to "In the Flowers". It just seemed like it was taking place outside, from the sounds and everything. We were so psyched about the environment it had. We were immediately like, "We need to find a name for this stuff, that's like a season or something to do with being outside and being around how everything changes and listening to music outside." It took us a while to get there.

yeah. me.

Love this album. Loved it on first listen and a month later it's greatness hasn't faded at all. It may only be January, but I can guarantee this will at least be in my Top 10 come December.

01 animal collective
02 andrew bird
03 antony & the johnsons
04 das pop
05 ac newman
06 the whitest boy alive

i've only had about 2 listens each. damn that animal collective is catchy. possible shot at my top 10 in what i anticipate as a PACKED year. :)

[EDIT: meant to put this in the rolling2009 thread, but it fits here too.]

Yeah, I'm very much with you, but you already know. I've cooled on it a bit in the last week, out of necessity. I need to own this. Sounds like a very kind person at Domino has set aside a handful of these for us ninjas. I'm pretty sure the repress should be hitting stores very soon.

If I may geek out a bit, while I love every song, these or parts thereof are currently my three favourites:

1. My Girls – Why are people even trying to remix this?
2. Guys Eyes – The psych-out in the middle is the most careful on the record, and the vocal return is not of this world
3. Lion In A Coma - Sooo Merriweather

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/f ... collective

That interview is actually pretty interesting, with some illuminating insight into how these songs coalesce.

Very appropriate to me that these guys be mentioned in the same breath as the Grateful Dead, and mention them in relation to themselves.

This is one of my favourite records ever.

SICK

the Black Man group know how to jam

Those parts of the song with the Noah "Woo!" and the club DJ-style climax/payoff (don't know how else to explain it; maybe Sanchez and Dalen can help) are just fucking killer.

I don't think they really do. I ordered one, but I bet it won't actually ship until the second pressing is done, in which case everyone else will have it, too.

Bagels are better than sliced bread. Merriweather is bagels.

If it was built from scratch I would agree...but they basically bought an older concert club and redid it. I figure it will be similar, but I one of the big things for me is stage / crowd setup. That is what I am most interested in.

Boston was severely lacking in mid-large concert venues w/o seats (which I generally hate) so this will be good. Plus prices seem ok so far (AC is $20 for reference)

the old house of blues in boston was pretty cool cos it looked like an actual house.
