Same here. He has about 100 nicknames an episode but I always laugh at a couple of them.

That's definitely going to happen. I give them to episode 6.

there's this tv critic who asserts that the opening sequence of the season premiere tells you all the basics of the whole season. . . here's what he gleans about some of the "reveals" this season from the pre-logo segment wednesday night. . .

Quote:
In the spirit of time travel, here are my predictions for the season to come, based only on the first episode:

1. That the show's writers chose to present three time periods before the commercial break suggests that Season 5 will be the most experimental one yet—with little or no regard for the usual rules of chronological storytelling. The motto of this new season was delivered by John Locke, while Richard Alpert was taking a bullet out of his leg: "When are we?"

2. In the first scene, Chang picks up a baby, but it's unclear whether it's actually his. Could it be Charlotte, the British anthropologist who, it seems, has returned to the island to find her birthplace? Or is it Ben's childhood friend Annie? I venture it's Charlotte, and also that the baby holds the key to one of the show's long-standing mysteries: Why do women on the island die during childbirth?

3. When Chang surveys the Orchid station, he says that there are rules to time travel. My groundbreaking guess: We'll learn the rules.

4. The physical effects of time travel will be more fully explained this year. When a miner gets too close to the energy source on the island, he gets a nosebleed—surely an indication that jumping from decade to decade messes with your brain, as it did for Minkowski last year. I expect the answers will come via a reappearance of Horace "My Nose Only Bleeds When I Wants It To" Goodspeed. Was he time-tripping when he saw Locke in the jungle last season? I think so. Don't know what I'm talking about? Rewatch Season 4's "Cabin Fever" episode.

5. While Jack and Ben discuss how to get the Oceanic Six back to the island, they see a local news report on Hurley's alleged killing spree. This juxtaposition as well as Hurley's run-in with the law at the end of the episode suggest Hurley won't return willingly. He'll have to be forced.

6. Daniel Faraday is the only character to appear in two parts of the three-part introductory segment. Expect him to be a major player this year, both as the time traveler in residence and as the guy who translates what's happening to an increasingly bewildered audience. Faraday, you could say, is our Constant—the guy who makes sure our heads don't explode while we try and make sense of all this time travel.

all pretty reasonable. . .

Has the freighter become a time landmark like the hatch, the beach camps, and the drug plane?

When Ben moved the island, the freighter disappeared with them as the guys in the helicopter couldn't see it anymore. But, when Sawyer looked out from the beach after the move, he couldn't see it either. We know at that point they'd moved into the past as their camps hadn't been built yet.

This gives a slim window of opportunity for Jin to live.

He only had a good thirty seconds or so from the helicopter leaving without him to the freighter blowing up but Daniel still has the zodiac. Eventually the freighter's bound to reappear when they jump back to their present or the future. The only hope they have, though, is to jump back to the day the helicopter left and somehow get to the ship and get Jin off the ship in those thirty seconds without anyone seeing them. Seems unlikely but I wouldn't put it past them.

Except that was an early 18th centruy pirate ship, and those were early/mid 20th century soldiers. So, unless they bought used...

Well, I thought that was awesome.

Eloise Hawking is definitely Mrs. Faraday.

Aaron, Ji Yeon, and Charlie are all set to be groomed as the next generation of Others.

Chuck Widmore being a former Other is interesting as he was an Other before Ben was even born. How they wound up so hostile toward each other and why ought to be good. As well as who the Others initially were to begin with.

Dan commented on gun girl looking like his coma girl. Presumably she is the same person? i.e. She will leave the island sometime after 1954 and go become his university test patient.

Rose and Bernard are assumedly out in the jungle somewhere with 9 other plane survivors. Other than Sawyer and Locke, that should be it for flight 815. Well, aside from Cindy, the kids, and the other tailies who have become Others circa 2006.

Maybe Widmore was groomed to be the leader before Ben took it away after helping kill the Dharma Initiative? I don't know if the timelines match up, but he did tell Ben that he "took everything away from me" (paraphrasing) when Ben approached Widmore in his bedroom.

Makes sense.

Do we still believe in the "once you step foot on the island, you can't die off the island" theory?

We've seen this a couple of times in action:
-Michael crashes his car and lives
-Michael tries to shoot himself but the gun doesn't fire, despite having all the chambers full
-Jack almost jumps off a bridge before a car accident catches his attention
-baby Aaron survives a helicopter crash into the ocean
-Sayid very-nearly-almost dies from the poison dart, but doesn't

I don't think we've seen anyone from the island actually die off-island. The only one who comes close is Locke but there's been no confirmation that coffin Locke was actually dead or that he died off-island.

It would explain why Ben and Widmore haven't killed each other, why Ben threatened to kill Penny instead of Charles, and why Widmore opted to send in Daniel, Charlotte, etc. to grab Ben first instead of Gault and his team of nutcases. He'd obviously prefer people who'd already been to the island to go than to send new people who'd become invincible once they landed.

i don't think it's necessarily the "once you're on the island, you can't die off the island," theory... i think it's more a matter of each person's 'timeline' and 'course correcting.' (which now i think is what the smoke monster is for - it course corrects people, if they change a belief or path that wasn't written for them, they die. that's why it scans people and kate/locke survived, but eko changed his path so that's why he died.) none of the losties were meant to die because their timeline didn't have it "written" for them - hence the RULES, when ben said "he changed the rules." alex wasn't supposed to die, which is why ben was so set on telling keamy to go ahead and do what he wants. since it wasn't "written" for alex to die, apparently widmore changed the rules and changed the timeline.

that's why it's imperative for the oceanic six to come back to the island to "save it" because they were meant to be on the island, so that's why they can't die off the island. michael couldn't die, because his purpose was to be ben's spy on the freighter.

i think that naomi, daniel, charlotte and miles work/worked for DHARMA - i think there are a few still in existence off-island (abaddon, etc.) which is why they are so adamant about finding ben. not to mention, it now makes sense WHY widmore is trying to find the island & ben if he previously was an other - perhaps he got connected with the surviving few dharma folks in order to get revenge on ben and alpert for the purge.

the whole "become invincible" once on the island, because of this whole time travel/course correcting b.s. i'm starting to believe, i think since 815 crashed on the island and it was 1996 - rose & locke were back to their healthy form, locke didn't become paralyzed until 2002, and not sure when rose got cancer, but i'm thinking 2002 as well.

Wait, when was it established that the island time was 1996 when they crashed on it?

it wasn't, sorry i didn't clarify that. i'm ASSUMING 1996 for reasons that make my head spin just even thinking about that, let alone trying to explain it.

Here are my top 10 observations after watching last night’s episode:

1. After spending so many years stranded on a remote island, wouldn't a boat be the LAST place Desmond would want to live?!?

2. Will there ever be a precise enough shift in time on the island for Locke and the gang to stumble upon Alpert during his extremely brief three-month "Batmanuel" phase?

3. The mullet on Oxford-era Faraday rivals Miley's daddy at his achy-breakiest.

4. When Juliet's Latin chat with The Others jarringly turned into a sudden escape attempt, Sawyer's plea for Locke to shoot the fleeing soldier should have been, "Ixnay on the ompassioncay, Mr. Clean."

5. Oh, that soldier was...YOUNG WIDMORE! That means he and Ben were both on Team Alpert at one point, so how did they become mortal enemies? My money is on a pre-teen Ben recklessly getting his peanut butter in Widmore's chocolate.

6. For the love of Jacob, can somebody please get Charlotte a Kleenex?!?

7. Going back to Alpert for just a moment...is it too rudimentarily ironic to point out his striking resemblance to Rod Serling?

8. Now that we've learned that the camp of The Others is immediately adjacent to a bomb named "Jughead," I fully expect future episodes to reveal a couple of Alpert's non-Widmore footsoldiers are named Moose and Reggie.

9. Back to the globe-yachting Hume family for a moment...if you're wife is in her fourth trimester, wouldn't you make a point of docking where you can run into a hospital to grab an obstetrician, rather than a mixed-use poker/cockfighting tent?

10. I said it before and I'll say it again - despite the growing protestations of Faraday - Miles needs more lines!!!

I'm pretty sure Miles' appeal comes in no small part from how few lines he has.

See: Hurley in the first season.
