Good work people. Some thoughts:

1. Agreed on not selling the '66. It's just too damn nice. Once in awhile I think "maybe I should sell it...?" and then I plug a tele into it and it sounds like Scarlett Johansson's natt butter. It stays.

2. The '96 Vibrolux... I should fix it somehow and sell it. Yes, I like a lot of things about it, but I'd rather have a Fender Deluxe Reverb instead, and that's a cheaper amp. That says something.

3. The Mesa... Still kinda on the fence. I haven't heard those Lonestar amps Bloor, so the jury remains out I guess, but so far all Mesa excels at (not just "pretty good" but worth my time and effort at this point) is the american metal sound. Aside from VHT and Soldano, they're really "it" in the way Marshall just can't seem to be toppled for that drier, flatter, more compressed EL84 british rock sound. What makes me want to keep it is that when I DO want/need to melt faces, it's just so deliciously good at it. The v-twin pedal into a fender makes a good effort, really it's like 90% of the way there, but nothing tops the real thing.

So I fix and sell the 90's fender combo with case, and use whatever money that gets me to go after something small and delicious. That nets me a good setup... one that's perfect at clean/vintage, one that's perfect at Grrrr, and one that can do something in the middle at low volumes and is easily portable...?

2 issues here:

1. I don't have money for him right now. I'd have to fix and then sell the 90's fender, plus have some extra.
2. He's in MA, but in the berkshires, 3 hours west. In warmer times, that could mean a motorcycle trip with bungee cables, but in winter it might as well be Toledo.

1. Serious problem.
2. That's what friends are for. Ply them with beer and pizza at a later or earlier date.

What's the difference between a Princeton Reverb and a Deluxe Reverb?

Deluxe is 22 watts, bassy, suuuuper deep reverb, perfect club / home / studio amp

princeton i think is lower grade, smaller (?). The old one were ok but small, the newer ones got all solid state and gar.

I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that my Hot Rod, while I like it, is kind of a jack of all trades but master of none and entirely too heavy.

I wouldn't mind something a little more lightweight but one that does something, if only one thing, really well.

Also, why the hell are Matchless amps so ridiculously expensive??

Imagine if jesus turned water into a reliable vox ac 30 from the early 60s and gave it more harmonic distortion and glassier cleans and that's a matchless

Mark Sampson took Matchless to legend and glory in the early 90s. His new line, star amplifiers, is an amalgam of his matchless and badcat designs.

your answer, sir.

Agreed.
And, if you want more portability, you can get a smaller cabinet for when you need to cart it around. But keep the Fender cab for at-home/rehearsal space.

Well, I've been unloading a lot of gear lately on ebay so I should be able to swing it but I just did a quick turnaround sale of my bass amp and bought a new one so I'm not as flush in the old Pay Pal account as I once was.

Sold: GK MB112E with case and footswitch

Bought: GenzBenz Shuttle 6.0 (will run it in the Eden 210)

Oh no shit? Well, I guess we finally got to play around with one. I gotta look up this GenzBenz.

Oh and Todd - that's a good idea, and one I had a while back but totally forgot about. Making single 12 cab with a good speaker in it would be pretty easy for me. Or shit, just buying one empty and putting a weber into it... That's a good project.

This guy has some pretty cool shit for making cabinets and also sells already built cabs and has a good selection of speakers to boot.

I stumbled on to the site when I was thinking about getting a Blue Dog for my little 1-12" combo and the dude is actually right up the road in McDonough of all places.

As for the GK: loved the amp for what it did but it really needs an external cab to sound REALLY good which at that point negates having a good sounding mini combo--might as well go with a high powered mini-head and keep toting around the Eden.

So, I'm in the market for a guitar upgrade.

I've been playing an early 90s Japanese strat and the sound is too tinny for the stuff I'm playing, which I guess I would describe as shoegazey country. I want something with a warmer tone and I can spend no more than $US 600.

A brief dig has turned up these:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 0295877899

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 3DWatching

http://www.justguitars.com.au/vintage-g ... uitar=1531

Also, it should be known that I'm one of those musicians that pretty much knows shit all about gear.

You need a Telecaster, Mick (maybe one with a humbucker).

Are you gonna sell the JapStrat or hang on to it for future use?

I think I'll hang on to it. I'm sure it will come in handy.

My mates that know guitars always tell me it's the best they've played of that vintage, so I don't wanna let it go unless it fetches a decent price.

Yeah, I was gonna suggest you keep it; I wasn't sure how much it had fallen out of favor with you.

Of your links, the kent is the best bet, followed by the hofner. the jag will sound even tinnier than the strat.

Have you considered playing around with new pickups in your strat?

Also, what amp are you playing? You might not need a new guitar at all, unless you're just jonesing for one, in which case bloor's suggestion of a tele deluxe is on the mark.

For noisy shoegazey stuff with rich distortion, i think you can't go wrong with a hollowbody with P-90s through a class a tube amp.
