Yeah, right after it finished I jumped to Wikipedia, and that chart helps quite a bit. I'm gonna rewatch another day.

superb movie and another example of a film that American filmmakers want to remake.

I heard some rumblings about an American remake of this. I don't know why they think that's necessary.

In my slowgoing attempt to watch all the Bond movies in order (and most for the first time), I watched Thunderball last night.

Not even sure HOW it could be done, given the subject matter (yeah, sure you could cobble together a story about someone interfering with a surveillance campaign, but I'm not sure it'd carry the weight of life in East Berlin before the Wall came down). Just found out the guy who played Weisler died in 2007 of stomach cancer. Sad.

It's an 80's cop drama, so right there I was skeptical, but this was pretty decent. Treat Williams acting was a little much to handle, but Sidney Lumet's style was evident and went a long way in forming my opinion of this.

Dear Zachary

This is a film that made the festival rounds, heard about it, but unfortunately didn't get to see in the film. Well, it turns out I fortunately didn't get to see it with an audience because I would've been blubbering like an idiot with everyone else probably.

The story is a beautiful one, despite the horrific circumstances that are contained within. In essence, its a love letter to many people, though only a few are specifically fingered. If yr Canadian then you possibly may have heard of the case. Basic synopsis is--man is murdered, finds out there is an unborn child with murderer, family goes through hell. Anything else I tell you might destroy any emotional connection you have since, much is built up through the film.

Why this wasn't nominated for best doc is beyond me. You guys wanted to know a great 2008 film, here's one. Just have the tissues ready.

My Best Fiend

Documentary on the artistic relationship between Klaus Kinski and Werner Herzog. Kinski has got to be one of the most interesting characters in popular culture of the 20th century. Absolutely bat-shit crazy. The scenes of him raving at an audience during a one man show is worth the price of admission.

Ditto - why remake a recent, well-made film? Just because of subtitles?

Man I liked that film.

and dollars that accompany a film without subtitles in this country, even though anyone who'd be interested in a movie like that probably saw the lives of others anyway and is scoffing at the idea of a remake.

Perhaps I underestimate the distraction of subtitles on that film, being able to understand most of it without them. But damn, that seems like a waste. Odds that it's as good as the original...?

Right. Remakes NEVER make money in America.

Most people are not "self styled film buffs" and will no clue that what they are watching is a remake or even loosely based on this film....Hell, I've never even heard of it.

I getcha, but this was fairly well-seen, believe it or not, and it was really recent, and it was just really damn good. Not in some special "you have to be mature enough to get it" way, but just good ol' fashioned high-quality film writing/making. To my eyes anyway. The list of films I haven't seen is enormous and frankly scary, but I saw this. It's not as obscure as you may be thinking.
