I need to give this a legit listen in a car or at home. The low mix of it isn't lending itself to my computer speakers at work (played at low volume)

That being said, I picked up "Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo" over the weekend and am digging the hell out of it.

Something about these guys' brand of garage rock is really working for me.

Because it's the real shit and not that watered down 00s-brand of garage rock.

What's weirder is that the lyrics are printed uncensored in the booklet that comes with the album.

Also, this is kind of a question that deserves it's own thread, but does anyone really think that the new vinyl trend isn't just a new hip trend? I don't have anything against vinyl...I like it just fine...but five years ago literally hardly anyone was talking about vinyl and now people act like CDs never existed. I think for new albums, the formats sound about equal (and sometimes the vinyls sound noticeably worse), but CDs are way more convenient. I guess one main difference is that you can't burn a vinyl from your computer. Still, I buy both formats depending on the price and/or album artwork...but really, the recent resurgence in vinyl just seems silly to me.

The funniest thing about the trend is kids claiming that vinyl just sounds better, man, but they're playing it through a shitty turntable that makes it sound slightly above "cassette" quality.

This record is actually good.

Some shitty moments, but I think this is a band that will actually get better as time goes by, unlike most bands these days.

They're still tossers though.

And the lead vocals could/should have been recorded a lot better. But I guess lo fi recording makes thinner voices sound better.

I love the way the rest of it sounds, even the backup vocals, but those lead vocals need to be way better in parts.

this sounds like an album they made to fuck with all the people that got into them and it had the opposite effect.

I dunno, there has always been a vinyl undercurrent, its just many more labels are embracing it, so it has gotten much bigger. I think in some ways its a trend, but its a welcome one that doesn't take away much. I've been buying used vinyl for awhile, scouring stores for pieces that were oop, or so cheap that I didn't need to buy a cd version of it. The prices have definitely risen.

Having monitored entertainment/music/features wire services at my old job for about 6 years, not a year would go by when I didn't see some permutation of the "vinyl is making a comeback!" story. Not one year.

A couple anecdotes, some industry sales numbers you can manipulate and take out of context, couple quotes from some bearded audiophile and a couple bands embracing the "trend" and "POOF!" - some lazy reporter has filed their byline for the day. Sad really.

Yeah no shit.

This has been going on since '98 at least.

Unless you're in a small backwater bogan town, vinyl, even shitty used stuff that's still in print and not even borderline rare, is starting to cost a fucking shitload.

this record needs to be remastered already. It only sounds decent if you re-eq the shit out of everything and get rid of all the low end.

i argued with my friends about this out on kedzie afterward. they weren't even the best band of the night. i don't think the sloppy schtick is very rewarding, though.

they were definitely not the most talented band here either. but i still think they're onto something else that most bands can't come close to.

as stated by the guitar player with the gold teeth last night "we're not four musicians trying to be friends, we're four friends trying to be musicians"
i thought it was beautifully put, and i think that is what makes them so hypnotic. it just comes through the sloppyness.

it felt like a basement party, or a really great punk show. they become the energy of the crowd.

side note: i was sober cab.

I don't know how the fuck they command so much energy from the crowd...Black Lips shows have the most massive swirling pits I've ever seen, more so than some metal shows.
