Awright, my Obnebbish friends, here's the promised partay report:
Doors opened at 11:30pm and Dustin from Hot Hot Heat was spinning the tunes (unsurprisingly heavy on retro '80s new wave stuff). Then the Organ's Shelby took her turn and played pretty much the same brand of noo wave nostalgia as Dustin.
A.C. Newman took the stage with a 6 piece band (with ex-Copyright Pete Bourne on drums) and proceeded to suck. The suckage was mostly due to a piss poor sound mix in the club, but the band also seemed unrehearsed. Maybe it was because only a couple days earlier I'd been blown away by Ted Leo in the same club, but Newman seemed completely disinterested in his own songs. On the plus side, he only played for 60 minutes.
Highlight of the night: we were joined at our table by MacLean (from Zed TV) and the pot activist/stoner-heartthrob
Watermelon. I spent most of the night talking with Watermelon, who is even more stunning in person. Funny, smart, and sweet as well. My wife and I both ended up with a huge crush on her.
Plus lotsa free drinks. Overall: a bad concert, but a fun time.
