After his successful bout with the giant creature in Cloverfield, director Matt Reeves is ready to take on young vampires in Let Me In, his remake of Tomas Alfredson's vampire film Let the Right One In. Production Weekly reports that filming is scheduled to begins this May for the film that follows Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy, finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire. Overture has slated it for release on January 15, 2010.

It took me a little while to get into, but I found myself really engrossed by the end. The acting especially The Fat Man character was excellent. I actually thought Bogart was a little inconsistent and almost bad in the beginning. The ending was a pleasant surprise and like nothing that would happen in a modern Hollywood production. Directing was pretty excellent, and really used minor characters to drive the intrigue. Also I appreciated that they didn't have to spell everything out for me.

great movie

It was. I feared in the beginning that it was overrated and I was going to be disappointed. But it didn't, and those last scenes with the Fat Man, Bogart, etc. were just awesome.

I'm working my way through film noirs right now.

If you haven't seen it, check out "Touch of Evil" with Orson Welles and Charlton Heston. Solid noir flick. Pretty famous opening long shot.

I always enjoyed the Coen Brothers take on the genre as well with "The Man Who Wasn't There".

gone with the wind. i have a DVR loaded with absolute classics right now. i'm slowly making my way through them. this was good. i can't think of a female role as developed as scarlett o'hara before this. i really enjoyed how her character played off more, uh, typical female roles (especially melanie and everyone's mother) and even some of the male roles (like ashley). but at the end i don't feel like she was anything more then than at the beginning beside a two-time widower and successful businesswoman.

watchmen. discussed briefly in the appropriate thread. i've read it and i liked this adaptation. i understand why they had to change some things or cut them out entirely. the opening credits were terrific and the music selections were pretty awful. but it still worked on most levels.

I saw it and it was great. Welles is a master, and his acting is almost underrated by comparison to his directing because he's amazing in Touch of Evil.

My only complaint is Charlton Heston. Not so much because of overracting but moreso because his features are absolutely non-mexican. It kept bringing me out of the movie because it was almost humorous. He's almost in "black face".

Haven't seen Cohens' take yet.

I've always preferred "Lady From Shanghai" as a Welles noir.

For other noir there's "Out From The Past" (with Robert Mitchum), although the morality watchdogs of the time ruined the ending. And, of course, "Double Indemnity".

isn't there some controversy on some versions of this, whether it's actually welles' cut or the studio's? the one that they show on turner classic has a short disclaimer at the beginning about the different cuts over the years.

this is due to welles' script revisions. the original script had the wife being mexican. but after janet leigh was cast, it was pretty clear that wasn't going to look right either.

Double Indemnity is actually up next. But I added Out from the Past & Lady from Shanghai to the queue.

out of the past is awesome. tremendous cast, perfect noir plot with double-crosses, deaths and dames. good stuff. i actually prefer it to double indemnity, even though jane greer doesn't come close to barbara stanwyck.

while we're talking about film noir, i'll throw out the asphalt jungle, the third man, stray dog and rififi.

the heist scene in rififi is incredible. i watched it at home and my palms were sweating throughout. it's also notable for being directed by a blacklisted american in france and has had a major influence on american heist films from then on.

yes Rififi is awesome. And Out of the Past is sort of the epitome of noir.

another classic is Kiss Me Deadly

The original theatrical release was not Welles' cut and the opening credit were different I think (same famous single take shot though)--maybe it was the music that he didn't like. Can't remember. Maybe about ten years ago they recut the film based on an extensive memo Welles wrote and they released that and that was the version available on dvd and probably on Turner. They just released a dvd set featuring the original theatrical version plus the re-edited version. They should have done that all along. Now I can get rid of my crappy VHS copy taped off AMC back when they actually used to show old movies without commerical interuption.

Thirded on Rififi. That heist scene is intense.

Agreed. Man, there is absolutely no middle ground with Coen Bro flicks whatsoever. They are either among the absolute greatest films ever made (O Brother Where Art Thou, The Big Lebowski, Raising Arizona) or the worst (Barton Fink, Burn After Reading).
