This was amusing. In a sense I made weird rules....only music I remembered from the time, and an album. Which ruled out a lot of great one-shot singles, many of which can be found on the Nuggets collections. E.g. singles like:
The Wailers – Out of Our Tree
Syndicate of Sound – Little Girl
Castaways – Liar, Liar

Albums:

1. The Strangeloves – I Want Candy
2. The Seeds – The Seeds
3. The Seeds- A Web of Sound
4. Blues Magoos – Electric Comic Book
5. The Sonics – Here Are the Sonics
6. The Sir Douglas Quintet- The Best of the Sir Douglas Quintet
7. The Sir Douglas Quintet - Mendocino
8. Electric Prunes – I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night
9. The Chocolate Watchband – No Way Out
10. The Knickerbockers – Lloyd Thaxton Presents the Knickerbockers
11. The Leaves – Hey Joe
12. Question Mark and the Mysterians – 96 Tears
13. The Count Five – Psychotic Reaction
14. Paul Revere and the Raiders – Just Like Us
15. Thee Midnighters – Thee Midnighters
16. Thee Midnighters - Unlimited
17. Amboy Dukes – Journey to the Center of Your Mind
18. The Human Beinz – Nobody But Me
19. The Kingsmen – Greatest Hits
20. The Blues Project – Live at the Café Au Go Go
21. The Blues Project – Projections
22. The Standells – Dirty Water

And inevitably (listening to them in the context of the time):
23. The Kinks – The Kinks
24. Love – Da Capo
25. Love – Forever Changes
26. Love - Love

yeah but, i was all into it and stuff, but i tried to do it, but it was like really really hard. 25 albums is a shitload of cream of the crop.

I thought the idea was to start a new thread for each one and have multiple people contribute multiple ideas.

We seem to be heading the direction of one person saying "Here's 25 essential ____ albums." End of discussion.

Not picking at you, or fussing with you, bro, but the Blues Project looks terribly out of place in that list.

so far i've seen two lists and i've not been able to add anything to the recommendations. i couldn't even recommend 3 hard bop albums let alone 25.

Well, in a sense you are completely correct. Lord knows the musicianship was mostly way above anything played in garages. My rationale is that Kooper's organ was garagey and pretty simple with obvious mistakes, the vocals really sucked, and there was a loose "trippy DIY" vibe that tapped into the same mainline as much of the garage bands of the time.

Looking forward to more.

One time I drunkenly argued that this was the greatest song ever recorded.
