I presume someone will observe that this is more tejano than Tex-Mex, but basically you just need to hear Flaco Jimenez.

1. Isidro Lopez – El Indio
2. Flaco Jimenez – San Antonio Soul
3. Flaco Jimenez – Flaco Jimenez y su conjunto
4. Flaco Jimenez – Sleepytown
5. Joe King Carrasco – Synapse Gap
6. Joe King Carrasco – Party Time
7. Sir Douglas Quintet – Mendocino
8. Sir Douglas Quintet – The Return of Doug Saldana
9. Freddy Fender – Before the Next Teardrop Falls
10. Freddy Fender – Swamp Gold
11. Freddy Fender - Interpreta el Rock
12. Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs – Wooly Bully
13. Los Palominos – El Ganador
14. Santiago Jimenez – Canciones de mi Padre
15. Johnny Rodriguez – Introducing Johnny Rodriguez
16. David Lee Garza – Ya Me Canse
17. Esteban “Steveâ€

My mom was a huge fan of Tex-Mex...not me.

Though, I have to argue Los Tigres del Norte. I've never considered 'em Tex-Mex or Tejano. What's your argument for listing them, H? Or is it just that particular album?

This album and I think they their corrido bounceyness are pretty close to Tejano... norteno and tejano blur a lot. Also (perhaps the real answer) I have chemical memories of LTdN. As I said, the list veers more to the mex than the tex.

I'd pick the self-titled Joe "King" Carrasco & The Crowns over Synapse Gap.

Also, it's stretching the definition of the genre, but David Lindley's El Rayo X could be a nice addition to this list.

I'd thought of both Lindley, and Los Lobos... but in a sense their tex mex tracks seem more like homages than the authentic deal.

I don't think so and agree with what Harry said ^^^ up there -- Los Lobos have done Tex-Mex songs mostly as an homage to the style and their upbringing. They've usually been remakes.

I really, really fucking like Doug Sahm, from Sir Douglas Quintet to Texas Tornados, his Capt. America-from-Easy Rider vibe just does it for me. A truly American archetype.
