you can't really have an essential hardcore list without a youth crew band

I just really always thought straight edge was paint by numbers run of the mill boring hardcore, mostly aping that east coast sound, and then tossing in a bunch of lyrics about how everything fun was bad for you and acting all self-righteous. Never liked it...although I do give props to Minor Threat as they had a good sound until they got totally copied by a crap load of other bands and I admit I liked a few 7 Seconds songs.

straight-edge hardcore is a boring, repetitive, you-had-to-be-there genre, i completely agree

sure, some are very cheesy lyrically, but as far as energy and songs go, there are plenty of straight edge bands that wrote some great stuff:

YOT
Bold
Wide Awake
Pressure Release
Void
Token Entry
Raw Deal
Supertouch

anyways, i'd like to see a hardcore list of international bands as well. shit like...

Ratos de Parão
Mob 47
Akutt Inlegelse
Raw Power
Lip Cream
Larm

i think a case for The Crew by 7 Seconds can be made. it's a bit of a precursor to the youth crew sound but it's also good hardcore.

YoT is a tough call. on the one hand, they were one of, if not THE forefathers of the NYHC scene, on the other, i personally prefer the bands they influenced - some of the stuff on Revelation Records that was already mentioned, and even H2O's Thicker Than Water

i think the Germs sucked, were a live novelty, and a band with a legacy thanks to a kid ODing. their recorded output is blech but that's just my 4 cents.

Ratos de Parão

Let's talk more about these guys. What I've heard has really varied in sound. Did they change members frequently? Some of it I like, some not so much.
