Strange matchup... but I've got a choice to make. The Thermals are playing in Little Rock on May 20th ($10 tickets), & Opeth is playing in Oklahoma City on the same day ($30 tickets). The distance I have to travel is about the same either way. I'm leaning Thermals, but I can be persuaded with good recommendations from those who've seen either of them live.

i'd choose thermals.

i have a couple of tough choices coming up too.

the thermals or king khan.
the bronx/riverboat gamblers or quintron & miss pussycat.
atmosphere/p.o.s. or thao and the get down stay down or dan deacon/future islands.

I've seen the Thermals live, and they were really good. I don't think I've ever even heard Opeth. I guess you know which way I'm leaning.

I've seen Opeth, and it was on their "mellow" tour with Porcupine Tree. They were playing mostly slow stuff, I think, not venturing into the metal aspects much. One of the most horrible & boring shows I've ever seen. One of the friends I was with actually curled up on the ground and pretended to sleep, pissing off Opeth fans to no end. I'm surprised he didn't get his ass kicked.

PT made up for it, though. 8-)

And I've got to say I'm not an Opeth fan. I like metal, but they're too schizo for me, veering between fast & slow, fast & slow, all the damn time.

I have seen them both live, and they are both really excellent live bands in their own way.

I'd probably go with the Thermals, mainly because its a better deal, but really you can't lose.

if you like both bands about evenly, i'd go with the thermals. it's a better deal and i think their recent output has been better than opeth's.

yeah i saw the thermals in '07 and loved them but i've never seen king khan.
does mark sultan just play in the bbq show? because it's kk & the shrines but mark sultan is opening.

i think quintron is gonna win out over the bronx (don't really care) but i'd like to see riverboat gamblers again. it's in the same venue so maybe i can see both.

as for the last one, i'm leaning toward thao even though i just saw her last year.

I've missed Thao every time she's toured, damnit.

The Thermals are a great show, but since they only play all-ages shows, bring a flask or something.

yeah, I'm not gonna be there. I'm also gonna miss the damn Primal Scream show I bought tickets for. Because live music hates me.

Opeth put on an amazing show.

Mikael Ã…kerfeldt is one of the funniest frontmen I have ever seen. Really, you can Youtube some of the stuff he has talked about at shows, and its all very funny.

When they play the first notes of "Heir Apparent" you know you are in for a great show. Propulsive, dynamic, haunting... truly cool.
