I was never really a fan of Gorgoroth, but this doc was very interesting. I like my metal with some vocals not just straight screaming or the cookie monster growl...Oh and Norway seems like a very nice country..But some crazy people.

BEST MUSIC READ EVER.

u guys, check this out...

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014809/

Although I'm not what you'd call a big fan of the music scene at the core of this film - I don't own a single one of the records - I've been aware of bits & pieces of the story over the years and had enough of a casual interest to catch a screening of the documentary at an AFI screening.

I was happily surprised by a few general aspects of the film - the general good film quality, the unlabored presentation of the characters, and also the unexpected soundtrack. As another reviewer says: "the music for this movie was very appropriate ... a mix of black metal and ambient music, making the movie very easy to watch while still putting you within the dark atmosphere." I'll add that this ambient music helped make the metal segments seem all the more heavy-hitting and abrasive. A wise choice.

It's refreshing, as in case of Until the Light Takes Us, when a documentary doesn't judge it's subjects, especially when the urge to justify their approach (aka cover their ass) must have been present. The viewer benefits most from this in the interesting present-day clips of Fenriz and Varg Vikernes (Burzum) and the unforced comparison of the two and the time they are given the time to reveal themselves, both good and bad (and very bad) through their own words and ideas.

Although this doc is unmistakably about a metal scene, it's also got a wealth of insight to the power of the entertainment news media to re-define the reality in ways they're irresponsibly probably not even aware of.

Thanks D, I'll be on the lookout for that doc..Gaahl is freaky at the end when he gets a little mad and just sits there for like 5min looking like a statue and not blinking..A murderer's stare if ever there was one.

I'm not really a fan of theirs, but that scene is very interesting.

Not a huge fan of the genre (mostly out of sheer ignorance of what is going on with bands, etc), but this stuff always interests me. I read a blurb somewhere in a mag about this being made. I'll be on the look out.

Also, wasn't Lords of Chaos or something of the like being made into a film as well?

i believe they're doing an acted version of Lords Of Chaos, which will prolly be laughable.

have you read the book? mindblowing read.

I just watched that doc on Gaahl, and in pt.5 when the producer is acting like a crybaby on the mountain...why is that even in there.

That was interesting enough but not very informative.

Until the Light Takes Us should be quite a bit better.

I just read this from wiki:

[quote]Gorgoroth not only refuses to publish their lyrics - and in some cases tablature [70], but also actively suppresses any public showings of fan-written reconstructions. The reason for this suppression is not fully known, though possible reasons include the desire to prevent other bands from covering Gorgoroth material as well as the preservation of the genre’s characteristic remoteness and exclusivity. The metal-lyric website Darklyrics.com contains the message “Gorgoroth lyrics removed due to copyright complaint by the band,â€

I liked some of his paintings.

My main question after watching it was just how a person who lives in a town of 12 people could even discover black metal. Do they just give out Venom records at random outposts throughout Scandinavia?

Yea, this VBS doc is very cool.

Dalen, didnt you link this along time ago? I know you have at least talked about it many times.

To me hearing Gaahl speak, he doesnt sound That menacing, but when he looks at the camera, he definitely has some wires askew upstairs. I loved that part of the doc describing his schooling, and then the climb up the mountain. To live in that environment, and feel the way he appears to feel, he must believe what he speaks of more than any of us ever will. I mean give it up, the man really has convictions and follows through on them.

I also really liked a few of his paintings; very surreal.

What Dalen said about metal and the amount of people who seem to like it on this board is totally true. When you listen to a Black Metal CD, or see a live performance, its amazing what these guys can pull off. I have nothing against simple performances like a singer/songwriter and a mic, but equally respect must be given for the energy and practice these artists perform. Like anything, Metal just takes a few listens before the melody, riffs, and groove grab hold.
Hell I am 40 and still love spinning the Black, Doom, Prog, Thrash etc Metal.

As an aside, I have been loving the new Lamb of God, WRATH. Every member of that band is like a musical scholar in regards to talent. Amazing performances.

Is he totally out, or are there some kind of Swedish-type parole restrictions?
