I think you'd be wrong to assume that. Pretty sure I recall that he's at least got a planned release of a shelved Crazy Horse jazz-leaning record that he hated until now. Then again, I wouldn't put it past Neil to further alienate certain of his audience and leave it at Blu-Ray or bust, but isn't that why we love him?

I just can't believe you uttered "F*ck Neil Young".

I seriously doubt there isn't a Neil Young fan in the world who hasn't uttered that at least once, and it came straight from the heart. I've wanted to hear these Archives for years and he's putting a LOT of money between me and those recordings and made it nearly impossible for it to happen. And then to see him dancing on a youtube video, goofing around singing "I'm a big rock star, My sales have tanked But I still got you, Thanks, Download this, Sounds like shit"

Thanks for all the music, Shakey. Maybe I'll take a fucking loan out to hear more someday.

And it's official, likely no Archives in 2009. At least I won't be missing out now.

Quote:
TORONTO - The wait continues for Neil Young fans.

Young's oft-delayed "The Archives Vol. 1 1963-1972" box set has been pushed back again until later this year with no firm date for its release, according to a representative from Warner Music Canada.

The collection, originally scheduled for release last fall, is expected to include unreleased studio and live recordings, fresh film footage, photos, personal letters and a 150-page book.

Some reports have indicated that the set will use the Blu-Ray format, but the Warner rep said details have not been finalized.

In the meantime, Young's new disc, "Fork in the Road," is scheduled for release March 31, with the title track already available for download on his website.

Early press about the record, however, has not been positive.

In a review of a Madison Square Garden performance by Young last month, the Village Voice called his new material "absolutely terrible."

The songs, which writer Rob Harvilla said seemed culled from a concept album about eco-friendly cars, were "disturbingly beef-witted" and the crowd reaction was emphatic: Harvilla reported that only 60 per cent of the original audience remained by the end of the show.

Young's interest in eco-friendly cars is well-established.

Last year, the legendary Canadian rocker teamed up with mechanic Johnathan Goodwin, in the hopes of converting Young's 1959 Lincoln Continental to operate on an electric battery.

Young is nominated for a Grammy Award for best solo rock vocal performance for his song "No Hidden Path," off last year's "Chrome Dreams II." The awards will be handed out Feb. 8 in Los Angeles.

And now it's set for June 2nd. BUT, with a CD version coming along too.

Quote:
Neil Young's "Archives" coming, finally, on June 3.
March 21, 2009 08:27 PM ET
Gary Graff, Austin, TX
Rocker Neil Young's oft-delayed "Archives" collection will finally be released on June 2, Young's manager Elliot Roberts announced at South by Southwest in Austin, TX today (March 21).

Neil Young fans got a glimpse at several of the veteran rocker's upcoming projects on Saturday at the conference. The June 2 release date for the long awaited "Archives" collection was revealed during a panel discussion that included Roberts and Larry Johnson, director of Young's Shakey Films, who also played samples of material from the anthology.

The set will be available as a 10-disc Blu-Ray edition listing for $299, a 10-DVD box for $199 and a CD version for $99.

Later in the afternoon director Jonathan Demme unveiled his second Young concert film, "Neil Young's Trunk Show," at the Paramount Theatre. Demme told the crowd that the movie, filmed during two performances at Philadelphia's Tower Theater in December 2007, "is a home movie in a way. We did it all by ourselves."

The version of the in-progress film screened Saturday featured onstage and backstage footage, including performances of "Harvest," "Cinammon Girl," "Southern Man" and "Like a Hurricane," among others. Deme said that while 2006's "Heart of Gold" was "meticulously planned," "Trunk Show" was done more casually. Asked when he would complete his Neil Young "trilogy," Demme responded "I should only be so lucky."

$99 for the CD version = not bad.

Especially considering that it will likely be "on sale" initially for a little less than that.

I'll probably pick up the DVD set and look for the "on sale" version so I can listen in my car.

I know I said earlier about getting BRD, but I think I'm gonna have to trade off in price and just get the DVD or CD.

I have tickets to see him next month and am anticipating a mix of everything with a slight emphasis on the Fork album. Based on the few songs I've heard, he currently seems veered towards Crazy Horse so it'll hopefully be a loud band.

okay. maybe I should just take the chance and go, too. it's expensive (70€) but I remember ticket prizes around 120 or 150€ in the last years... one of these shows was solo.

This just looks like a Neil Young box set, much like other box sets released by major artists, just a hodgepodge of studio stuff (greatest hits), live tracks, demos, and alternate mixes.

In other words, no thanks.

Exactly. It would appear he's just remastered a few tracks off of Everybody and Goldrush and put them in this very special box.

hmmm...you can order each disc individually too. i wouldn't mind having the book and the journey through the past dvd, but that would run me $60.

im also very disappointed with what i see here. 2 previously released concert disks, and the other discs have loads of album tracks...cmon Neil, what are you thinking here...fans likely already have that stuff. The only disk that looks great here is disk 00 with the squires stuff.

i was expecting to buy this thing without any doubts, now im not so sure.

$10 says this doesn't actually see release either, or if it does, that it's hopefully just a precursor to the real shit

I guess if these discs really are sold separately, I'd get the "Live at the Riverboat" one. I could pass on the Squires stuff, honestly. Most of Neil's pre-Everybody Knows songs weren't very good. And yeah, that includes the Buffalo Springfield stuff (I'll say it - Stills was the star of that band).

Anyhow... where's the David Briggs version of Tonight's the Night? A Neil Young-sanctioned assembling of Chrome Dreams?

I was reading Thrasher's Wheat last night and evidently the Tonight's the Night and Chrome etc. are on tap for Archives II, released in 2054 or thereabouts.;)

Also according to that board, we should all be ashamed of ourselves for even being slightly ungrateful regarding the Archives. The Massey Hall and Fillmore albums were previews of the box set, and if we decided to buy them before the box was released, TOO BAD. And this is Neil's LIFE work, when he releases the remastered version of the studio albums in the next year we should be lucky to get those too. And also if we don't buy the blu-ray we're insanely stupid.

Check this out: Neil's 1984 appearance on NASHVILLE NOW

Recorded around the time that he toured with Waylon Jennings in support of the then shelved Old Ways. Young's backing band includes Spooner Oldham, Tim Drummond, Anthony Crawford, Carl T. Himmel, Rufus Thibodeaux and Ben Keith and the interview segment also features a chat with Waylon Jennings.

Anyone buying it today? I've decided to opt out until I can truly afford to drop $200+ on a dvd set.

Quote:
Neil Young box set worth the wait
By DARRYL STERDAN - Sun Media

"It's already together. All you have to do is make sure it's in chronological order, pick the art that goes with it, pick the packaging (and) put it out."

That's how Neil Young summed up his Archives box to a biographer.

In 1991. That was two years into the project.

What happened between then and now, only Neil knows for sure. All I know is that Archives has been a Holy Grail of rock 'n' roll for so long, it makes Chinese Democracy look like a rush job.

But finally, after countless blown deadlines, a few technological upgrades and ever-expanding horizons, Archives Vol 1: 1963-1972 -- now supposedly the first of four boxes chronicling the Canadian folk-rock icon's long and winding career -- is here.

For real.

I've got it.

I've heard it.

I've watched it.

And you know what?

It was almost worth the wait.

Available Tuesday in three formats -- on 10 Blu-ray DVDs (about $315 online), 10 regular DVDs (about $265) or eight CDs (about $100) -- Archives Vol. 1 is almost worth the price too.

Simply put, it's monumental in every sense of the word. It's technologically innovative. Historically definitive. Exhaustively (and exhaustingly) detailed. Artistically revealing -- and not just for fans.

"It's interesting how I contradict myself over time," Young chuckles at one point. Nice of him to notice.

Here's what I noticed about Archives Vol. 1:

The Outside

Even before you take it out of the plastic, it's impressive. The box stands a foot high, and is 7.5 inches wide and deep -- about the size of a decent-sized stereo speaker. Weight: Six pounds.

The Inside

Flip the lid and you find four vertical slots housing another box that snugly holds the discs; a 4.5-foot foldout poster; a thick book; and a "secret stash" drawer with extra goodies (more on the last two later).

The Overview

True to its title, this covers Young's early career -- his beginnings in Winnipeg, his days with Buffalo Springfield and CSNY, and his albums up to Harvest. In that chronology: Nearly 130 songs that last nearly 10 hours. About 50 tunes are previously unreleased cuts, live recordings, alternate takes and different mixes. And those numbers don't include dozens of hidden songs and videos.

The DVD Interface

You can do it the easy way, and just play the songs in order. Or you can do it the hard way, which is more fun. Hit Song Selection and a virtual filing cabinet opens. Each tune has its own folder. You can play the cut, read the lyrics, check the credits, scan photos, examine documents (letters, postcards, drawings, sheet music, etc.), read press clippings and eyeball memorabilia. Each disc also has a bio for the period, and a giant timeline that puts it all in context (and sometimes links to bonus fare). The Blu-ray version allows new content to be downloaded to the set.

The Audio

In a word: Pristine. In fancier words: Everything is remastered in 24-bit 192 kHz PCM audio (Blu-ray) or 24-bit 96 kHz PCM audio (DVD). The latter has 256 times the resolution of a CD. That technology works wonders not only on the scratchy old recordings, but also on the later material and hits. You might have heard some of these songs a million times, but you've never heard them quite so clearly.

The Sonic Highlights

Along with familiar fare, there are dozens of buried treasures. Among them: Young's first singles with his teenage band The Squires; early demos of Sugar Mountain, Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing and more; the unreleased Springfield cut Sell Out; 15 minutes of the band's final concert in 1968; a slew of live CSNY; different versions of Wonderin', When You Dance I Can Really Love and others; radio spots and interview excerpts; and concert "raps."

The Videos

All the songs come with visuals -- an assortment of tape decks, turntables and oscilloscopes that serve as video wallpaper. But the set is also peppered with a couple of hours of footage, including: TV appearances by Buffalo Springfield and CSNY; unseen footage of CSNY at Woodstock, Big Sur and the Fillmore East; Young solo in a New York folk club; Neil recording with the London Symphony Orchestra; interviews at his California ranch; videos of him rooting through documents with archivist Joel Bernstein in 1997; his surreal 1974 film Journey Through the Past; and even a film of Young finding a CSNY bootleg while record shopping in Hollywood -- and then confiscating the album from the bewildered clerk.

The Book

All those pictures and letters on the DVD? Most of them are also in the book -- a 240-page tome with a faux leather cover. It also includes a list of all the tracks -- along with more recordings that remain tantalizingly unreleased.

The Goodies

Inside the cigar-box drawer are a Whisky A Go Go notepad, a copy of the Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House CD/DVD, and -- best of all -- a download card for MP3s of all the tunes.

The Quibbles

Two discs -- Live at the Fillmore East 1970, and Live at Massey Hall 1971 -- have already been released in Young's Performance Series. Ditto the Sugar Mountain set. Another album, Live at the Riverboat 1969, is also part of the series. A small problem: These discs don't have all the same features as the others. A bigger problem: Young completists -- the fans most likely to shell out for this -- already own most of them.

The Bottom Line

So, Neil: How long until Vol. 2?
