yeah it's good but it's not out on dvd until the end of april. i had to burn subtitles into a french dvd rip. it gets a little torture-porny in the last third but yeah, it's pretty fucked up. the main girl (lucie) is pretty hot, even though she's covered in blood most of the film.

i just heard someone describe it as a torture porn version of radiohead's just video.

Elevator to The Gallows was good, if you like Noir, and you like foreign films, you'd enjoy this. The Miles Davis score was awesome.

Synecdoche, New York - Certainly a quality film, but jeeeezus this was the kind of film that sticks with you and lingers in your mind. Some incredibly depressing scenes, but there was also a good deal of humor running through the film. I'll have to give this some more viewings. I loved the ending.

The last third comes across as torture porn. I don't know, some people say it's just beautiful at the end but I don't see it. I was pretty unmoved. I liked the first 2/3 though.

If anyone tells you to see or suggests you rent Happy-Go-Lucky, DO NOT DO IT. One of the most annoying movies I've seen in the last 5 years.

Yeah, I'd probably be thinking about this one more if hadn't seen so many movies in the past several days. It was definitely the best of the bunch, though. As bleak as it was, I did find myself laughing at the absurdity of several parts.

Other stuff I've seen in the past few days:

Happy Go-Lucky. This was actually pretty good, my second favorite of this handful of movies (next to Synecdoche). It's pretty slow; the main character seems annoying at first and not much really happens over the first hour of the movie. What it manages to accomplish amazingly well though is make you not only sympathize with but really admire Poppy and the strength of her character. She almost comes across as a saint, but it's believable.

Milk. This was pretty good. I didn't really know the story so most of it was new to me. It seemed to be well-told, and the acting was really solid.

The Watchmen. This was OK. Easily my least favorite of the bunch. I'll say more about it the other thread.

Haha. I must have been typing up my last post just as you posted this.

I totally understand how someone would feel this way, and I actually gave up on it and went to bed at about the 1:20 mark before picking it back up the next day. That's just prior to big confrontation near the end, though, which really brings the whole thing together. I think the ending totally saved it, honestly, but maybe it helped that I didn't watch it all in one sitting.

Rachel Getting Married

I'd heard a lot of buzz about this, so I watched it tonight. Definitely a Jonathan Demme film in terms of character development. Pretty heavy material (it's not a "feel-good" movie), and I won't tell you how it ends. Anne Hathaway was quite good, in that I vacillated between hating her and loving her. Also assembled some interesting music "stars" too-- Sister Carol, Robyn Hitchcock, Tunde Adebimpe-- and even Roger Corman made an appearance.

The Third Man - The movie had as much talent in a single movie as I have seen. The acting was beyond good with almost every character being noteworthy. The movie did drag in a few places, and I found the female character not very interesting. Also, my contemporary eyes saw the twist coming a mile away. The ferris wheel scene and the sewer scene were excellent for different reasons but both made the movie worthwhile. The ferris wheel because of Orson Welles -the cuckoo clock line was great. The sewer scene because of the directing. Reed managed to keep it exciting and I think one bullet was fired the entire time.

The Lady from Shanghi - I really regret that I can't see the version that Welles intended as the editing was horrible, and made the story seem sloppy. Welles still shines through. As compared to the Maltese Falcon this is less bleak and more creepy. The characters didn't seem amoral but rather evil. I still have "Lover,.." running through my head. Also the protagonist was much more likable than Bogart's character. One of the few movies I've seen where Welles's character is the least interesting. And I honestly I could watch 48hours of Rita Hayworth sleeping. Jesus she was sexy.

But the truly great part of the movie was playhouse scene. Just fantastic the way it was shot. I also like how the movie built up to a surreal sequence instead of surrealism being used throughout the picture. It made the final scene so much more potent. I can't imagine a modern director using so much restraint with a device. It's hard to watch Welles and not marvel at his talent.

born to kill - lawrence tierney as a badass murderer in a love triangle with two sisters. this is like second-tier film noir right here. not bad, but i have a real problem with these movies where two characters meet and are practically married a scene later. and it was pretty obvious what was going to happen, even with the little changes of heart on audrey long's part. elisha cook jr plays his typical cowardly villain. that dude always brings it.

It was okay.

The acting was superb. I normally hate Sean Penn, but he was great. Emile Hirsh was kind of bad but I think he had a pretty tough job. Franco and Brolin were both great as well.

The story is very compelling.

But Van Sant is a hack, and totally ruined the movie. It was beyond sloppy and it was pretty clear he didn't know how to put this together. So many broken artistic elements that he couldn't tie together. It was like he didn't know how he wanted to do it, so he did everything he could think of, and hoped that it could be edited together.

Watched Lady from Shanghai over the weekend, thought it was pretty great, but you're totally right about some of the editing making the story seem sloppy. really awful in some parts. Welles voice annoyed me a little bit too, but you were right about him being the least interesting character in the film...just about every other character had terrific depth and creativity to the character. The final scene made me wonder if Enter the Dragon may have be inspired at all for the mirror scene.

Watched a Spanish horror flick called 'REC' last night. Definitely recommended if you like creepy, claustrophobic, disorienting and jump-out-of-your-seat inducing moments.
edit: apparently there are clips on youtube for anyone who is interested in a preview...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWAI8eHIilg
[this was remade as a flick called 'quarantine' here in the states, but i havent seen that one yet...
Also mentioned this in another post - our friend made a doc called 'Over The Hills and Far Away' about a family that travels to Mongolia to find help for their autistic son. Totally compelling. major theatrical release wont happen for a few months, but apparently they're working on a PBS hour long edit.

I Love You Man -- I saw this with some friends and enjoyed it quite a bit. The Apatow haters will of course hate it, despite the fact that he had nothing to do with the production of the movie. The banter between Jaime Pressley and John Favreau was one of the better parts of the film. JK Simmons was underused.

I respect his thoughts on the matter. Humor is subjective, so if people don't find it funny, end of story as far as I'm concerned.

It's mind boggling to find that I am the only one here.

There's just NOTHING funny in any of these movies.

I'll catch ILYM when it comes on one of the vast array of movie channels.

One of the better political docs I have seen. It's scary how on point Eisenhower was when he made that speech.
