I'm excited about this new one because thought their last was a near-return to form.

Sounds of the Universe is the upcoming twelfth full-length album by Depeche Mode, to be released in Germany on 17 April 2009, internationally on 20 April, and on 21 April in the US and Canada. It will be supported by the Tour of the Universe. The album is set to contain 13 tracks, confirmed via the official Depeche Mode website.

Dave Gahan has, once again written three songs with Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott, which are "Hole to Feed", "Come Back" and "Miles Away/The Thruth Is". "Spacewalker" is an instrumental and Martin Gore sings the lead of "Jezebel" and "The Sun and the Moon and the Stars". "Peace" is a duet between Gahan and Gore. "Oh Well" is co-written by Gore and Gahan.

According to Andy Fletcher, a lot of extra tracks were recorded which will be on a deluxe version of the album. The Deluxe Box Set Edition includes three CDs containing the album, bonus songs and remixes, as well as 14 exclusive demos ranging from as far back as the Music for the Masses era. It will also contain a DVD featuring three films, a promo video for Wrong, four songs filmed live in the studio in December 2008, plus two 84-page hardback books. The first book will feature the lyrics to all the songs from the Sounds of the Universe sessions, along with exclusive photography by Anton Corbijn. The second book will contain exclusive and candid studio photography by Daniel Miller, Ben Hillier, Luke Smith and Ferg Peterkin.

Quote:
In 1990, Depeche Mode had just released their "Violator" CD... and decided to make an in-store appearance at The Wherehouse music store in the Beverly Connection. About 15,000 people showed up -- some camping outside the La Cienega store for days.

........

The crowd got so out of control that the riot police was called and the band had to leave early. The story wound up leading newscasts.

So finally getting the chance to really listen to this. Some tracks are great (Fragile Tension, In Sympathy). Most are snore-inducing (I think "Wrong" wasn't a good choice for the first single). Return to form though? Meaning they've gone back to using a programmable drum machine instead of a guy beating on a drum machine? Personally, I'm not sure that a "return to form" is always a good thing. This is ok, but doubt it'll be in heavy rotation.
