It's mind boggling to find that I am the only one here.

There's just NOTHING funny in any of these movies.

I'll catch ILYM when it comes on one of the vast array of movie channels.

I'm with you, Gar. I'd never pay full price to see an Apatow movie in the theater, and haven't yet. Closest I came to that was seeing "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" at a McMenamin's pub here, and I paid all of $3.

It's not that I think they're completely unfunny; the subject matter of the movies typically doesn't interest me.

And "Synechdoche, NY" was a real snoozefest.

Drunkenly watching this now, and it's really, really, really bad. I went into it wanting to like it, too.

I don't know that I would classify that as a COMEDY. An inoffensive trifle, maybe.

I guess the last COMEDY that I watched and thought was really fucking funny was probably Old School. Also, Superbad had it's moments, that motormouthed fat fuck was amusing.

My problem with most comedies is that I usually enjoy the comedy of every day things that could reasonable happen, not absurdity like flute playing ferrets or whatever the fuck.

Did you see Forgetting Sarah Marshall? I don't think Apatow was involved with it, and I'd say it was fairly "every day things that could reasonably happen". I thought it was great. I really enjoy Jason Segal though. Dude cracks me up.

I think the only time I even cracked a smile was when the rockstar guy was singing "Inside of You."

It's that whole style that I just find very funny. Like the anti abortion cumdumpster flick...I forget the name.. but the fat slob and Paul Rudd go to Vegas and there's the scene with the mushrooms and all....openly not funny.

It's not just Apatow, it's all those dudes who are supposed to be funny and don't ever deliver.

Watched Quantum of Solace last night. I thought it was all right, I'm not really a Bond guy though.

transporter 3 - horrible. and disappointing cause i love 1 and 2

punisher war zone - loved it. as a piece of art/film/movie it was not good at all. there were a lot of peripheral characters from the comics involved but had little to no explanation of the who/what/why. it was if you were only reading issue 3 of a 5 issue story arc. that being said, i thought it was a great translation of a punisher comic. very very violent, they got the origin right (or at least better than the first one), and it was just no nonsense brutal action.

the day the earth stood still - began watching this late last night. fell asleep. will report back later.

We watched this last night. It's not in theaters...got it from netflix. It's a somewhat amusing documentary on the lives of 10 or so people who try to make a living being extras in movies (although some were trying to do it in addition to a regular job I believe). It clocks in at barely under an hour and 30 minutes. It was enjoyable and informative.

Well, I assume you're referring to Juno (which I also hated; err, didn't like) but I wouldn't really classify that as a comedy either. I get what you're saying. There's definitely a certain feel and formula to Apatow's films. I get tired of it quickly. But, there are always parts that make me laugh a lot, and that's all I am really looking for at least with just mindless laughing.

Did you see Pineapple Express?

I think he was referring to Knocked Up. Juno isn't purely a comedy the way the Apatow movies are.

I was surprised how much my wife and I both enjoyed Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Maybe it was just low expectations? I really thought it was pretty entertaining, though.

Kinda surprised that the one Apatow movie GAR find's tolerable is Superbad. Generally when I talk to people who don't like Apatow (and I think there are a lot in the 35-45 age range), they hate Superbad but think Knocked Up is OK.

Maybe I just come from seeing too many comedies by SNL alumni and the Farrelly brothers. By those standards, Apatow & Co. have cranked out about 4 masterpieces of film.

Did Paul Rudd and someone else go to Vegas and eat shrooms in Knocked Up? I thought that was Juno. I must have them confused...

Again, my thing is that most of these movies are supremely mediocre, yet showered with praise. Nothing infuriates me more.

You've definitely confused the two.

Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan.

Seth Rogan, the star of Knocked Up.

This may be the root of the problem. Humor is directly related to intelligence, so the notion of turning off your brain to enjoy a comedy seems fairly incongruous.

I wouldn't say 100% of the time though. Physical comedy isn't really that intelligent.

Intelligence is WHY you laugh at physical comedy - the humor is based on the incongruity between expectation and actuality. That's why cats and babies don't bust a gut when you hit your thumb with a hammer.

I see what you're getting at; I guess I'm thinking of the Three Stooges style slapstick, which I just don't see as intelligent at all.

I think physical comedy is very dependent on the actor's talents. More so than delivering a joke.

Ok. I see what you're getting at. I think I explained it poorly (shocker)? It's base humor. It's not witty or clever, it satisfies the 14 year old in me. It's stupid and I'd never defend it as some sort of high quality comedy. But, fart jokes and dumb shit like that, unfortunately, makes me laugh. It's not ALL I laugh at, but it does happen.
