As a kid and even a teenager, it didn't take much. I can remember being scared to death by even the most easily dismissed things. Now, not so much. I really can't remember the last movie that honestly scared me. I mean scared as in bothered by, not gore or the like. Anybody have any suggestions. I feel like I really need something to keep me awake and disturb me. Probably not, but humor me.

Tough to say. Everyone is different. Horror flicks fall in the same arena as comedies to me. I usually don't go into them thinking I'm about to see Citizen Kane. I just enjoy them for what they are and find them entertaining. Although, "Let The Right One In" was the last "horror" flick that I felt was worthy of the critical acclaim it received.

The last movie that really disturbed me was the remake of "The Hills Have Eyes". I'd never seen the original but the whole apocalyptic vibe and brutality of the whole thing just freaked me out a little.

Also, The Descent did a pretty good job with this as well. Maybe not disturbing so much as it was just pretty frightening.

I've actually been looking at picking up "Let the Right One In". If it helps, the last ones that probably came close were "The Ring" and "The Grudge". I think if "The Ring's" ending had been a little different, it might have done the job.

"Let The Right One In" has a couple of shocker type moments but it is by no means distrubing. It's just a good story and great movie that happens to deal with the stuff normally relegated to horror but in a more human way. Recommended regardless.

If you've never seen "The Hills Have Eyes", check out the remake. I though it was great (in that disturbing kind of way).

The trailer scene is just beyond fucked up.

I just watched this again on DVD tonight. I love this movie. It's definitely not disturbing in the way SB is looking for (I suspect), but it's still highly recommended--still my favorite from '08.

Alexandre Aja is ggreat at disturbing scenes without the real stitch-through of an entire movie. "Hills Have Eyes" remake is very well-done, but "Mirrors" (although not that great a movie) had some outstanding scenes.

If you've never seen "Opera" by Argento, that's a good one for many reasons...

"Right One" is a good movie dealing w/horror themes, but it doesn't quite deliver that kind of shock you seem to be looking for...

Original "Last House on the Left" is pretty keep-you-up-at-night, as in "The Candy Snatchers", the original version of "The Hitcher",

It's really hard to find the "jarring" kind of feeling movie you're describing in newer cinema. For the most part, if it's new, unsettling, and will keep you up at night, you might be better off not watching the movie (a la "Hard Candy"), as the movie ain't worth the moment...

I thought "Mirrors" was excellent. Didn't scare me, but Keifer and the rest did really well.

Not to hammer home the point but, most disturbing (newer) film I've seen in the last year was actually:

Masters of Horror: Dario Argento: Jenifer

and, as the movie progresses, I'm gonna triply-recommend "Opera" if you haven't already seen it, even though it has possibly one of the least effective Argento scores...

Not even the bathtub scene? For a major-studio flick, that was pretty darn subversive...

If you're going to go visitor Q, then you might as well go for "Audition", then "Ichi the Killer" (Sp)..>

Takashi Miike, in at least one of his 5-per-year-output, put a new spin on F-ed up...

"Let The..." Is Awesome - I thought you were looking for scares. I mean, "Orphanage" is good but not (in my opinion) scare-worthy..

ichi was great, but to me that's not so much a horror flick as it is a good japanese slasher flick.
i'll second 'REC'. first movie in forever to actually make me have a visceral reaction [translation: we all jumped during certain points in the movie].

i think the key to a great horror flick isnt the shit you see on screen, it's the psychology of making you afraid of what isnt. i think that's why movies like JAWS and Alien are so good. those directors knew how to manipulate their audience.
my 2c.

I don't know if you'd consider it Horror, some call it suspense, but Audition definitely ranks.

oh and stay away from the masters of horror series as most of them are pretty crappy. "cigarette burns" and "imprint" are the only really good ones.

i find that the scared-est i've been has been when i wanted to be scared. if you're skeptical then you can pretty much not be scared by (scarred, not startled) by anything.

case in point for me was pulse. i got myself up for it and had the light off and it was quiet and it creeped me the fuck out. meantime, most folks say they think it's hokey.
