Inspired by Donovan's thread about the Steve Earle Townes VanZandt record.

I can think of a couple of pretty great tribute albums just off the top of my head:
Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye: A Tribute to Roky Erickson
Introduced me to the man's music. Has some great versions of Roky tunes by ZZ Top, Poi Dog Pondering, T-Bone Burnett, Primal Scream, and a few others whose names I can't really remember right now.

The Bridge: A Tribute to Neil Young
Great versions of "Helpless" (Nick Cave), "Mr. Soul" (Bongwater), and "After the Gold Rush" (Flaming Lips). I have it on vinyl, so I need to re-buy it to remember who else is on there, but I liked a lot of it.

Also, that Daniel Johnston Tribute has some pretty good stuff.

Which? There's so many.

If you mean Discovered, Covered: The Late, Great Daniel Johnston, that's pretty funny because I just sold it after realising I never listened to it.

I Killed The Monster: 21 Artists Covering Daniel Johnston has some good stuff on it, though the acts in question aren't as big name as the former.

I like (and listen to) Discovered: Covered.

I really enjoy This is Where I Belong: Songs of Ray Davies and the Kinks...its a lot of AAA bands as expected...

Yo La Tengo
Fountains of Wayne does a pretty fun version of Better Things
Lambchop
Queens of the Stone Age
Cracker
Josh Rouse's cover of A Well Respected Man is one of my favorites

Does anyone have "Badlands, A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska"?

In my usual vein of items that have little to no traction here, For The Dead In Space- A Tribute To Tom Rapp and Perls Before Swine, Volumes I, II, and III

They are always inconsistent in quality so none could be regular listens for me. I usulally end up trading them in for that reason.

The best i've heard though are this leonard cohen tribute, the bridge neil young tribute, and this tribute to the 60's artists of greenwich village.

Who Cares: A Tribute to the Who which allmusic tears apart. I like it though. The thought of tribute albums simply covering the songs are boring.

Queen Tribute: Dynamite with a Laser Beam put out by Three One G, so you can just about imagine the renditions of Queen you're getting here.

1. The Blood Brothers "Under Pressure"
2. Get Hustle "Another One Bites the Dust
3. Asterisk* "Ogre Battle"
4. The Oath "We Are the Champions"
5. Go Go Go Airheart "Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To)"
6. Upsilon Acrux "Bicycle Race"
7. Sinking Body "Who Needs You"
8. Glass Candy "The Fairy Fellers Master Stroke"
9. The Locust "Flash"
10. Weasel Walter "Bohemian Rhapsody"
11. The Spacewurm "Vultans Theme (Attack of the Hawk Men)"
12. Fast Forward "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"
13. The Convocation Of "get Down Make Love"
14. Bastard Noise "Lily of the Valley"
15. Tourettes Lautrec "Killer Queen"
16. Melt Banana "We Will Rock You"

Great topic!

The only tribute album I listen to on any kind of regular basis (i.e. Is on my IPod) is the Virus 100 tribute to the Dead Kennedys. Nomeansno's verion of 'Forward To Death' is still amazing to me.

tribute albums always fucking blow.

That I'm Not There soundtrack is actually one of the better ones getting around. Though even it has Pearl Jam, jack johnson, and that awful Karen O attempt on it.

Agreed, though the rest of the record is spotty.

The Bridge: A Tribute to Neil Young
Beat The Retreat: Songs By Richard Thompson

I'm definitely not much on tribute albums but these two have some good tracks.

I just think that this was a funny title for a tribute record that doesn't really exist (and probably shouldn't).

the main one I can think of off hand is Fast 'n' Bulbous, the Captain Beefheart tribute. Although I have to admit that I haven't listened to it in years... all I can remember about it is Sonic Youth did a cover of Electricity.

OH, also, Eyesore which was a tribute to The Residents. Predictably spotty... but some delightfully odd artists to be found.

I think perhaps my favorite in the way of tribute albums is Knitting on the Roof, which was a tribute to the musical Fiddler on the Roof, which featured artists like The Residents, Negativland, The Magnetic Fields, Eugene Chadbourne, among others. There are a few tracks that fail to impress... but over all it is pretty fantastic.

6. You're Gonna Change (Or I'm Gonna Leave) - Tom Petty
7. You Win Again - Keith Richards

I don't think there is a single tribute album that I like or even own.

If a band I like has a tribute made, the songs usually disappoint. If a band I like makes a tribute song, I usually only get that song.

Even though it's only one artist, I like to think of Kozelek's What's Next to the Moon as an AC/DC tribute album.

That would work, as would Stand In and Deliver.

It's probably a label/contract obligation. Generally speaking, I'll blame label affiliations as the reason why most tributes suck. The bands that should be doing the covers often aren't allowed.

thread was inspired by an artist doing a full album about one artist, and most of the posts are about group efforts. I think they are pretty different beasts.

Willie Nelson has done a bunch that I've liked. I feel like country and folk are more forgiving for this type of thing.
