Does seem a bit unrealistic to tote around rocket launchers and ak's and hold prisoners belonging to countries with massive, massive military power, and get your feelings hurt when someone gets shot. I mean, kudos for trying, but still.

my prediction is that some freight lines who have that route will resort to hiring a private security company a la Blackwater to have ridealongs for the next year or three until jack sparrow and co. cool their jets

Clearly, being robbed at the 7-11 for the register is the same as having your freighter boarded by men with enough fire power to stage a small war is the same thing.

They do actually instruct these crews to cooperate, not get killed, and even forbid them to carry weapons, fwiw.

Define "your" in this case. Captain's just a hired gun--it's not his loss. And, for that matter, if they have "enough fire power to stage a small war" then I definitely don't want to fuck around with them.

My only point is that you'll never be in the situation of the captain, who by his actions did manage to keep 20 of his men from being captured. Apparently, the captains of 200 other men failed to do this. Obviously, he felt an obligation beyond being a "hired gun" to his men to break the rules he was issued by the boat company, who probably only do care about money. And will the insurance pay the ransom to free these men so they can go home to their families?

It's worth very little. Heroes are not defined by following instructions in the interest of saving money. He acted boldly in the interest of saving his men, and without regard for his own safety. And it worked. If he' s not at least a little bit of a hero then I don't know who or what is.

Yes, typically the ransoms have been paid, though I don't know by who. I haven't researched this story and I have no desire to look beyond the surface, but I'm not convinced the cpn's decision made the situation better.

Yeah, keeping yourself ignorant of the facts is probably the best way of maintaining that you somehow are right.

I'm not sure what facts would make it okay to endanger people's lives. And I'm still not sold that anybody's lives were endangered when this started, whether they were holding firearms or not.

Thank god, there was no "hero" captain aboard these ships, and everyone is safe and sound

I'm sure those 300 hostages are really happy that no one has tried to rescue them.

I'm sure they all feel safe and warm knowing that insurance companies are looking out for them.

It sounds to me like this guy was uncooperative from the beginning. After jumping overboard twice he's lucky the pirates didn't kill him right away.

One man's "cooperation" is another man's unacceptable buckling under to physical threat. I'm with the captain. The specific choices the pirates made to get them where they are today may have involved desperate economics, but you stick a gun in my face and you lose all right to understanding. Period.
