Came out today on Yep Roc. I hadn't heard it was coming out, so I was surprised when I found it recommended to me on Amazon.com

Ok, got a full-revered preview in the NP thread for today. Is there a link someone could PM?

Eh, yeah... I only check the NP: threads when I post in them, and that's rare.

Not a shot at you, stu. Just a double-up on the want to hear.

So unbelievably good, and in my opinion, not a bad song on the album. I can't believe how natural John Doe is as a straight country singer.

Might be an active link here

I second that emotion. This is fucking great.

I saw on emusic that John Doe had a new one coming out today, but I never would have guessed it would be with my favourite country backing band, the Sadies. Best surprise I've had in a while. Thanks!

i thought it was great. the faster songs are great, and don't seem to wear out their welcome. the ballads are ok - somewhat standard - but they are based off an older, higher standard than the typical modern country shite.

Album got bonus points for naming one of their songs 'Sudbury Nickel'.

I would like this better without the covers. If you're going to cover "I Still Miss Someone", it should great or at least interesting. Their version is neither.

That's a little harsh, for my money's worth. It's not ground-breaking, but it's enjoyable. So far, anyway (halfway through the song).

edit: digging the acoustic solo.

I don't think it's harsh. If someone covered "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and it was enjoyable but nothing special, I suspect we'd all want to hit the skip button. "I Still Miss Someone" is like that for me. So is "Stop the World and Let Me Off"

ah. That may have as much to do with your particular reverance than with the cover itself. That is, anyone else who just knows and likes (but doesn't revere) those songs might think these covers are alright.

Having said that, I liked the covers from Teddy Thompson a year ago a lot more than this. I think those met your criteria (different, interesting, "great.")

Everything thing you say is correct. I love those songs.

Seriously, guys? This was f-in' horrible. I was holding back the nausea on every cover. The only redeeming thing here was the song about the husband knifing the stranger. I can't believe that i agree with rads.

Phosphorescent - To Willie

Now here's a record (all covers) that I can get behind. If you haven't heard it, you're missing out.
