I know there's some hockey fans out there, so I figure with the first games starting tonight, we should do a little bracketing. I haven't been around for a couple weeks much so if I missed this being done somewhere already, MODS delete thread! :)

My predictions:

East

Bruins over Habs (I cannot WAIT for this fucking series)

Caps over Rangers

Devils over Canes (I am conflicted on this though and just chose one rather than the other)

Pens over Flyers

West

Sharks over Ducks (no question in my mind; Sharks would have to really fall to fail at this first round)

Wings over Jackets

Blues over Canucks (sorry Rads, it's a prediction based solely around emotion--plus, Sundin hasn't exactly been a world beater. Best shot at Canucks winning is Luongo because he is...well...a badass.) :)

Hawks over Flames (as much as I love Bertuzzi, I think Khabibulin in a contract year with a young team in front of him is gonna be too much for Calgary. I don't see the Hawks going past round 1 though)

Now that I've predicted, I expect to be completely wrong in most of my choices. haha

I'm a flyers fan more so than a hockey fan (i can't name a single player in the west, literally) but I'm really looking forward to this series. I don't have much intelligent to say beyond the obvious of the Flyers need Biron to play well in goal.

My predictions:

East

Bruins over Habs

Rangers over Caps (sadly)

Canes over Devils

Pens over Flyers

West

Sharks over Ducks

Jackets over Wings

Blues over Canucks (hope I'm wrong)*

Hawks over Flames

The above means the 2nd round goes like so:

Boston beats NYR
Pitt beats Carolina

San Jose beats Columbus
St. Louis beats Chicago

3rd round:

Boston beats Pittsburgh
San Jose beats St. Louis

Final:

San Jose beats Boston

* I think the St. Louis/Vancouver series is going to be a war, and I'm calling whichever teams survives it the dark horse to get to the conference finals.

Yeah, I know it's a long shot, but Detroit has the worst goaltending of any team to make the playoffs since the goalie mask was invented. Their only hope is that Conklin shows up in game 3 and stands on his head.

Also, fuck them.

haha

I disagree that the jackets will win, but that's good stuff.

I haven't even considered going further than the first round. I suppose that means mine aren't full brackets, but who cares.

Also, can you tell me why you think it'll be Rangers over Caps? Just curious.

I think the Rangers have more depth and better goaltending than the Caps, and that'll be the difference over a 7 game series. The one major weakness with the Rangers is Marcus Naslund, who is a cancerous growth of FAIL stuck to the team's collective ass.

But go Caps.

I agree with the netminding. I think the thing that concerns me most about the Caps is that they're a bunch of arrogant kids who think they're better than they are. The final 3-4 games they showed laziness and just general disinterest and it makes me think they think they're better than they are. Plus, I am concerned at how well Staal and Girardi are gonna effectively shut down Ovechkin. Plus, Backstrom and Semin are nice depth scorers, etc but I think most predictions are underestimating dudes lile the Clutchmaster: Chris Drury in the playoffs. While I don't think the Caps are gonna lose, I don't think it's gonna be as easy as the whole Caps organization seems to think it is.

I am going to the game this saturday. First ever live NHL playoff game. I am stoked.

Awesome! There's seriously nothing like it. The speed and violence and intensity of the game increases by about 50%.

hockey arguably has the largest improvement in quality by being there live.

I used to really enjoy hockey, and then I just kinda laid off a year or two, and then was lost as far as players and things. That was like around 2000. I should check out some of these games.

I think the most exciting ones to watch will be the BOS/MTL matchup. Starts tomorrow I think. Of course, they never give it national attention. That's reserved for Crosby, but they'd be the funnest, IMO.

Hells yes. I can still watch on TV if it involved a team I'm interested in (ie, Detroit) but just about any game live is awesome.

Bruins v Nasty Habs is going to be f'ing awesome. Congrats to Versus for finding a way to get 1 whole game from that series on national tv. Assholes. When Krejci dissapeared and half the roster was out injured a few months back I thought the boat had sailed on the Bruins and thier lack of blueline depth and the only way to salvage the season was a 1st round matchup and victory vs MTL. That way if Washington, Philly, NJ beat them in round 2 it would not be a total disaster if they had beat the Habs in rnd 1. Bruins are going to crush Montreal.

Philly was my preseason pick to win the East, so I am not picking against them. Least not in round 1. I loooove their depth upfront and think it trumps Pittsburghs top end talent.

Caps have to win. As much as I'd love Chara and Lucic to get 4-7 games against Avery in a series, I'd prefer to see Ovechkin go 2-3 rounds deep. I think that would be really entertaining, at least until they face the Bruins then I'll be yelling every curse word at him.

How can I pick against Marty B and a team that got here pretty much without him? Staal can't score vs good teams and Brind'amour is getting up there. I think this is a slam dunk.

Wings are like the Sabres from '07: Awesome 5on5, but an absolute disaster on the PK. The problem is not just in net, but gutless pukes on the blueline like Brad Stuart who won't block shots. I don't won't to go out as far as Radcliffe and call them dead in the first round, but I think the BJ's beating them in round 1 would be less of an upset as the Wings getting to round 3.

Ducks vs Sharks is going to be great. Yes, it's the favorite to win it all vs a one line team. But still, this can be an incredible matchup. I'll get to see all of the games so I hope it goes long. But the Sharks will win it.

Canucks are my dark horse to win the West. Yes, Demitra along with the twins have pretty weak post season resumes but the fact that all 3 are UFA's this Summer I think puts some fire in their eyes. And Mats finished the season on a hot streak. Plus Kesler is the type of forward you love having this time of year because of his two way play. I have a ton of respect for Andy Murray and would not want to face one of his teams in the playoffs, but this ST.L doesn't have a roster as solid at the two Kings teams he took to the playoffs in '01 & '02.

I'm torn on the Chicago v Calgary series. I think it's going to be a blast and I'll call Calgary, but there's something about the Flames that makes me think they should be better. In Cammalleri they have a cocky sniper UFA to be who thinks he's worth $6 million and wants to prove it. They got Mr Everything in Iginla, Jokinen who wants to prove he's a playoff performer, a great blueline, forward depth, a solid goalie, unattractive fans who will get topless after victories.... why is it so hard to pick them over a bunch of kids who are seeing NHL playoffs for the first time?

As usual Damen all your points are all valid. I can't argue with any of them, except for the Flames blueline - they're decimated from injury. Regehr and Sarich are both out, Phaneuf is a total phlop this year, and their AHL fill-ins are pretty weak. The series will be ugly - and Calgary will take a physical toll out of Chicago - but I think in the end the young upstarts will overcome.

I have loved hockey since i was a kid and been a die hard canucks fan just as long. I pay for cable TV only during the NHL regular season and playoffs and watch every canucks game I can.

That said, I have never had any interest in the other 29 teams in the league which leaves me nothing to base my predictions on how these brackets will pan out.

I will say I would LOVE to see Montreal take the Bruins in 7.

That, and the Canucks will beat the Blues in 6.

maybe 5.

Canucks all the way for me. Im a major canucks fan, and refuse to look at any of this objectively - when it comes to the playoffs youve got to just go for your team, and not worry about anything, including what your predictions might be.

Vancouver definitely deserves a winner, it is a hockey mad city, and youre already seeing white towels everywhere (a tradition canucks fans started)

Players to watch will definitely be Kesler and Burrows - the grit, intensity, and skill they have is perfect for playoff type hockey. But as someone else said Luongo is the key - when hes in a groove he is unbeatable, and he was starting to find his groove at the end of the regular season

go nucks!!!
