god lord, please no. this guy, though, makes a convincing arguement that they weren't the worst thing to come out of the cesspool of 90s rap-metal.

They just need to hold out through hipster nostalgia for Harvey Danger coming around the bend before Obner will accept them.

I can't tell an appreciable difference in quality between Limp Bizkit and say any metal band that obner wacks it to these days.

that video of him on the Tom Green show is one of the funniest, saddest things I've ever seen.

I'm having trouble parsing this, but it seems like you mean "Harvey Danger was a similarly crappy band that Obner people embraced after they forgot how they were a one hit wonder undeserving of respect, just like Limp Bizkit." So I'm going to defend Harvey Danger as if you said that. I didn't like "Flagpole Sitta" when it came out forever ago, and never bothered trying to hear anything else until Z recommended "Wine Women and Song" a little while back. So then I downloaded the album it came from and realized that a) Harvey Danger had probably actually been a pretty respectable band all along, but just got lumped in (by the mainstream radio and in my own brain) with the Verve Pipe and EMF because they showed up in the same place at the same time, and b) they were ahead of their time, releasing an album on the internet for free before any other band you've ever heard of, and that's pretty respectable too.

So like, lay off Harvey Danger.

That's fine. I couldn't say anything about the merits of Harvey Danger. I meant more that Obner are sheep liking music decided for them by who knows. Metal is cool right now, and I have this feeling that 90s radio is up next for what starts out as ironic-indie cool and turns into genuine indie respect.

I just pulled Harvey Danger as the first band I thought of from the 90s that had a hit single but nobody talks about anymore. Maybe they were a bad example. How do you feel about Geggy Tah?

I recall hating them because I found out their name is a mispronunciation of "Greg and Todd" or something. They sounded like some sort of proto-Guster?

I don't know why HD gets a bad wrap. I never liked his albums but its not the worst thing I ever heard. But, damn, I know 2 people that get pretty heady when he's criticized.

I can get on board with this. How many shitty bands lay claim to Nirvana as an influence? How many good ones?

Probably good ones and bad ones in equal measure. I think it's just the nature of being that big at one time. For better or worse, almost all bands after 1991 are reacting to Nirvana both good and bad bands. That's probably more of a testament of their greatness than anything else.

Moreover, I'd argue that more bad bands were actually influenced by Stone Temple Pilots but feel the need to name check Kurt because Scott Weiland isn't as cool.

Oh so many shitty bands with oh so many name checks. I agree Nirvana is checked as influence for a generation of shit bands, but Nirvana is'nt the only band that ever influenced shit.

What were the top ten singles of that year that the Harvey Danger single came out? Not that that's an indicator for shit, but I'm willing to be that song is better than most of them.

Despite these people being just general meathead dopes........... I can't even front. I was all over "Nookie" and "Break Stuff' at the time they came out.

My cred is shattered.

The equivalent goes on every day here. Ref: Animal Collective. We'll all share a fond laugh about it a decade from now.

Please. I dare you to dig up 10 threads on Obner started before 07' and not started by Twilight Kid that discussed the merits of metal seriously and were not popptoddlike threads of nostalgia.

There aren't many metal fans here now. I don't see some massive big trend of ironic hipster metal-embracing going on now. (If anything, that happened prior to 2007.) Now, of the handful of people who talk about metal on here, you've got Dalen and Twilight Kid and maybe one or two others who are old school metal fans and always have been, cemetarypolka who is apparently immersed in some mid-Atlantic death metal crowd, and maybe a handful of other people who like some of it here and there or just enjoy going to see some of it live. It's not like metal hysteria has taken over this board. Most of the metal threads are still started by Twilight Kid.

Metal fandom tends to persist irrespective of trends.
