news this morning.

It's fun to watch them dance around the fact that this story is actually "repulsively ugly woman has beautiful voice, somehow."

It's on MSNBC every morning.

I think Jessica Simpson paved the way for this since she got like so totally fat, but still had a real pretty-like voice.

kidding aside, i think she'd do extremely well in musical theater, most likely typecast as a matronly orphanage-master, or doubtfire-esque nanny or head servant

Is it just me or is this completely totally hyped bullshit?
Her voice doesn't seem, to me, to be that phenomenal.
I guess she is fugly, but she sounds like any other broad in a church singing some la-de-fucking-da hymms.

No she does have a very good voice, from the snippets I heard this morning. Much better than most church matrons. The fact that her face could make a freight train take a dirt road makes it newsworthy, apparently.

It is more than her ugliness. I was surprised more based on her social ineptitude and borderline craziness. Who wears a moo-moo to a televised audition and announces that they have never been kissed?

"It's the feel-good tv movie of the season, starring a tumor on Bea Arthur's ass as Susan Boyle..."

Of course from the modal Obner perspective, that kind of retro GWBush era self-congratulatory snarkiness, this is a big lol... the eyebrows alone. But on the other hand it is a great human story... and resonant especially to women, older people... the feeling of being caught in life, and the unfolding of one's life that's been scripted by others' values and and definitions. Life passing by, opportunities lost, unable to show one's worth and beauty... life lived alone. And suddently a transformative moment that claims all that back.... if only for 3:30 on YouTube.

It was manipulative and bathetically sentimental. But powerful... I mean she sorta sounds like Celine Dion, although a little rougher and forced... I can't abide Celine Dion, but I watched this five times profoundly moved. All that being said, it's now become ridiculous media stories about media stories... that great western phenomenon of being famous for being famous.

What also isn't noted is that the song had a wonderfully schmaltzy melodic impact and the lyrics are darkly appropriate for this "we are hungry for transformation" treacle... I mean "this hell I'm living" indeed.

There was a time, when men were kind
And their voices were soft
And their words were inviting
There was a time, when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they turn your hope apart
As they turn your dreams to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my dreams with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he'd come to me
That we would live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from the hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed

They played this on George Stephanopoulos this morning at the round table and journalist Cokie Roberts didn't know who Simon Cowell is. What planet has she been on?

Harry pretty much nailed the significance in his post.

You'd think the country that produced Rodigan would be more open minded.

She has a single coming out soon, a version of 'Cry Me A River' and from what I've heard its really good.

Disturbingly, without visuals, it gave me the horn.
