This was very good. Compared to the three 40s of High Life I've had tonight, it was heavenly.

I had one of those last night as well, very good. It took me forever to drink it cause it was so fucking strong.

then moved on to this:
Smuttynose Scotch Ale

then had a couple standards at dinner:

Finished up with a couple of these so I could wake up without a headache:

Good night though...

i also tried the most recent special craft dogfish to come to stores around here, recently. it's called "Forte" and it's a raspberry flavored beer. it tastes like wine. it's 17 dollars.. and it's definitely my least favorite dogfish i've had.

Smuttynose makes a scotch ale?! They're nextdoor out here and I haven't seen it.

Must. Find.

I had the Capital Blonde Dopplebock for the first time over the weekend. Holy hell, that is one of the best beers I've ever tasted. I can't really afford to drink it with any regularity, but on special occasions this will become a new standard. YUM

trying this one out right now and it's really nice. Avery is quickly becoming my favorite local:

Image

cool backstory for this one too:

Quote:
Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales, created by us - Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing. After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized that we both had a Salvation in our line-ups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the rights? "Hell no!" we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex libation. In April 2004, in top-secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well actually it was packed in the pub, and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations. Natalie, Vinnie's much more significant other, exclaimed, "We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!" "Perfect!" we shouted. We celebrated deep into the night, (or is it morning?). Fast forward to February 2008, and we completed our second blending of these two fine ales. Batch 2 will become available to the public February 12th.

All profits from this joint venture will fund a return educational trip to Belgium with our bros Tomme (Port Brewing), Sam (Dogfish Head Brewing) and Rob (Allagash Brewing). This pilgrimage will enable us to learn even more about traditional brewing techniques to combine with our already strange and unique styles here in America. Gezondheid!

ABV 8.72%

How does craft beer work in states with that 3.2% beer law?

Oh cool I saw this at the store by the house, and I wondered what the hell the deal was. I'ma pick this up next.

Meanwhile, I think I have a new local favorite. Long Trail Double Bag.

Image

I've had it several times before, and yet I always forget how good it is. It's very mild, very smooth, kinda coppery but not tannic. They call it a "double alt" and it does remind me a little of the Hannen's I had in Germany way back. But this one has almost 8% alcohol, despite being priced like regular sixpacks. Two of those over the course of an evening and I'm happy as hell.

Tell me about this one. I've been looking for a good Scottish ale since my favorite (Grant's) has disappeared. I love a big, malty, caramelly Scottish ale!

Lake Louie in up WI makes the best one I've ever had, Todd. It's on tap at a few places in Madison and I think Milwaukee, donno if they export to IL.

Double alt sounds pretty damned interesting to me. I'll have to check with my local innkeeper and see if stocks it. If not, he'll get some if I ask.

I'll have to ask my friend John to stock some for me the next time I come up to visit/record with him in Baraboo. Or, to send me some down!

Thanks for the tip!

(Double Bag) It's good. It's about Bass-colored, not overly hopped, pleasantly bready tasting, and doesn't really jar the taste buds one way or the other. It's stealthy, which is what I like about it. It starts off like a session beer, but by the bottom of the first bottle things start getting warm and fuzzy.

There's a pizza place across the street from our old place in madison that makes decent pizza (better than average, but not amazing), but has this beer on tap. And because of that, we eat there everytime we go home, just to be able to stare at a fucking pitcher of it. It's sweet, chewy, a little tart, has a good hop head on it, and kicks like a mule.

So this was really, really good...

Image

Sipped it outside under a tree yesterday for a few hours, and got a great buzz.

Next up on the docket are a sixer of Sierra Nevada Torpedo and this, which looked intriguing...

Stone is my favorite brewery, period.

I had these yesterday:

[img][130:500]http://www.ratebeer.com/beerimages/full_size/1087.jpg[/img]ImageImage

Shakespeare Stout: Yuck. I think I'm just not really a stout fan (although I love Imperial Russians).

Dirty Bastard: Eh. I don't think I'm the biggest scotch ale fan either, but this one wasn't much better than the Sam Adams version to me.

Centennial IPA: Fucking delicious. One of the five best IPAs I've had.

That dirty bastard is a solid scotch ale, so yeah, you may just not like scotch ales. They're supposed to be chewy, sweet, caramelly, thick, not too hoppy at all, and high in booze.

From what I understand you cannot get Lake Louie anywhere but just right around Madison. Not available in Milwaukee, which is why I pick up a sixer of the scotch everytime I come to town. Lake Louie is so damn good at what they do, that they can't even keep Madison happy with inventory from what I hear.

And Todd the other scotch ale I had is very good, but still not as good as the Lake Louie. Do yourself a favor and get it.

I had a good amount of this on Friday at the beer fest. It was interesting, but I don't think I could ever bring myself to buy it.

Top choices for me were these:

I waited until towards the end to try the hoppy stuff, but by then I was drunk enough that it didn't really matter.

The Deschutes guy was actively trying to get everyone wasted.
