I'm not the sort of Christian that gets too worked up about whether or not something is offensive. I figure God's a big boy and can probably handle it. Though my God is more like Everything There Is than an actual personage.

I don't find anything offensive about it, and think that it actually could help people towards a healthier relationship with their christian beliefs. I think its a great gospel song.

When pressed, I say I'm a Unitarian-Universalist. If you'd asked me a year ago whether I was christian, I'd have said no. I'm not sure I believed in God, or whatever term you'd use for a higher power anymore. I started taking a workshop at the beginning of the year that's opened questions about the gap again though.

I've noticed that I'm a lot less afraid of Christians since starting this workshop. I've noticed that some don't hold on to their Bibles as tightly as others, and they are pretty decent folks. One of them is a 92-year old Bishop who still plays golf; he's cool as hell. He's not interested in "converting" me and we've had several great discussions about faith and spirituality. I think he'd like those lyrics, if not the music.

I think the biggest problem christians (and other faiths) face today is how to reconcile the false division between the spiritual and secular world they've accepted for so long. I believe that Jesus existed, and that he was willing to die in order to pass along a vision of a better world--and that is damn heroic; the whole divinity thing is kind of irrelevant. I don't know whether that makes me a Christian or not, and don't really care much.

I'm not sure the image of someone dragging a dead/dying Jesus behind their car is a very good one.

Seriously? Stop Breathin, Hegel, The Theory and a couple others are pretty serious about their god-bothering.

Don't forget Kit.

Anyway, in regards to the OP. Uh, not offended at all.

...keeping in mind I dressed as Drunken Jesus for Halloween last year. So, as far as Christians go, I'm the one going around being offensive.

I find the last line hilarious--and obv the best/important part.

I can certainly see how people might take it in a sore way--it's probably sardonic in tone? (never heard the tune). Certainly nothing to lose breath over though.

Count me among the Jesus-followers as well.

Todd--it doesn't offend me in the least. I mean, I already think the "church" needs to loosen up and be less formal as it is. To me, the song isn't incorrect in saying that Jesus could score more goals than Gretzky, cause he could. Perhaps your friends are against the drug references with their Lord? I dunno, I think God has a sense of humor about him.

No way. The church needs to tighten up. There is nothing lamer than those young, "cool" churches and their douchebag "super-approachable" pastors. They are butchering faith into a marketable product.

as a non believer, i'm torn on this issue. I think the church could benefit from some "you either believe all of it or you don't" dogmatism, which would weed out most of it's followers. On the other hand, "take the part that makes sense for your life" followers are certainly more agreeable humans.

I just hate the way these types of churches generally pray on the weak, homeless, drug-addled and all-round less-fortunate, scrub them up and spit them out as half-brained god-dependent delusionals.
