Just saw the new Star Trek movie tonight. I'm not a big trekkie or anything, but my dad is and he used to take me to all the movies as a kid so I was fairly excited to bring him to an advance screening.

I thought it was pretty damn impressive, the humor from the original series is back and the sets/special effects were great.

My dad was a bit miffed at the whole spock meeting kirk storyline, but whatever...the movie clearly aims to reinvent the franchise rather than impress a bunch of nerds.

I'm unabashedly looking forward to seeing this, didn't think it was out yet.

Good to hear. We're taking a group of 10 yr old boys to see it for my son's birthday. Previews have looked pretty cool, though I'm not into Star Trek at all.

My boys are psyched to see this.
Previews do look pretty cool.

My girlfriend is a big Next Generation fan, but hasn't seen a lot of the original series. We're trying to watch as much of the original series as we can before the movie. The movie has been getting a lot of good early reviews so I am hopeful that it will be a fun movie. There's also a comic book prequel to the movie that came out recently that I am hoping to read sometime this week.

I'm not a Trekkie, by any means. But I did find the original series hokey and poorly acted. The NG, however, actually had some pretty good acting, and the story lines were a lot more interesting.

I've seen most of the original series episodes and what amounts to about two seasons of Next Generation episodes. I like them both, but if I had to choose I'd go with original series (but like I said there are a ton of Next Gen episodes I haven't seen). First Contact is up there with Wrath of Khan for my favorites of the movies though.

I'll go with Todd here. Original series is cool and all, and I'm a big fan, but I think Next Gen is better acted, better written, more dynamic, and has better special effects. Original series really came up to another level with the first four movies, IMO.

Excited about this film. Nemesis would have a terrible way to end the series of movies.

Every series has plus and minuses. The sets in the original are awful, the self-righteousness of Next Gen is suffocating, the somberness of Deep Space Nine is irritating, the touchy-feelyness of Voyager is a bit much, the FUCKING THEME SONG of Enterprise almost kills the entire show.

But I like all the series and fully endorse the tight oufits of Jeri Ryan and Jolene Blalock.

Best observation in this thread. Couple of truly underrated hotties.

As for the argument that seems to be brewing here, I only watched the original when I was young and have only caught a couple of the Next Generation by chance. Probably high in college.

I don't know which is better but is there any doubt about:

thanks for no spoilers, dave. my dad used to take me to opening night for the original series movies, too. some were obviously better than others, but we usually always had fun talking about it.

i'm going to a screening tomorrow night. i'm even skipping franz ferdinand for it. it better be worthwhile!

I think it depends on what you're looking for from the Captain role.

Everyone in the movie does their respective roles justice without resorting to acting like caricatures...Scotty and McCoy steal quite a few of the scenes.
