If the Caps win, Tort gets the boot. I think that's pretty obvious. But if they pull it off, which I doubt, does he still get the boot? How can a guy punish Avery and then turn around and play Tie Domi in Philly with a Caps fan? He lost the team & any victory tonite will be in spite of him. He needs a fresh start elsewhere.

Brash got what he deserved. Yes, his rep added to the suspension but that's the risk you take when you sign an Brashear, Avery, Gauthier... type.

Sharks,

It's funny, the blame game started in the local Bay Area media even before the puck dropped last night and of course Nabby got most of it. Yes, this was by far Nabokov's worst postseason (.890 save %), but two Springs ago he had a save % of .920 and they got bounced in the second round. This team top to bottom is just not ready to play post season hockey.

And I really question in hindsight how Wilson built the blueline. He added PP specialists Boyle and Blake to a blueline that was already heavy on point talent and short on corner and boards grit. I understand why Wilson did it the way he did, Vlasic makes pennies on the dollar for what he's worth (under 800k), why would you move him? But Murray is the only blueliner that plays like McLaren and Hannan did years ago and Getzlaf, Perry and Ryan ran wild when he wasn't on the ice or it was a PP.

Interesting stat I just realized. Of the top 7 scorers so far in the playoffs (8 points or more), Ryder 29, is the oldest and then Semin at 25. Everyone else is 23 or younger.

If you extent it to the top 17, which is 6 points or more, Ray Whitney (36) and Poti (32) are the only ones 30 or older.

Glad to see the Caps proceed in the playoffs. People are starting to get pretty excited around here.

That arena in Newark had to be pretty damn quiet at the end of that game.

My roommate and I were hoping for the Canes to win because we wanted to face Pittsburgh and not NJ (CAPS, that is).

We didn't think it was gonna happen. Jokinen's tying goal was awesome and hardly anything that Brodeur could do about it. But that shook him up. Dude phoned it in and seemed to obsess about that tying goal and the fear of a let down and while Staal's gwg was a nice shot, it is one that Brodeur would probably LOVE to have back. Disappointing for him, I am sure, but I am glad we face the Pens next.

Fuk I wanted NJ to win so the Pens would play the Bruins and Crosby and Malkin would have to go up against Chara and a pretty good Boston team...I'm sure Bettman's creaming in his pants over the Crosby/Malkin vs. Ovechkin 2nd round match up..

70 miles west, but close enough proximity that people are getting really excited about the possibility of them winning it all.

I like the Caps, but c'mon... they got taken to 7 games by NYR. This is gonna be the whole 'nutha level that people like to talk about. Plus, I noticed in that Rangers series that the Caps in general really don't like to pass the puck - the Pens could make them pay for that if they don't adjust.

I am curious to see how it plays out. I think this series will be a lot more run and gun on both sides. I am interested to see how Varlamov handles the Pens offense. I think this series could go either way.

Has the schedule been announced? I am praying the Bruins series plays on the same night as the 'Hawks and 'Nucks. Otherwise I don't see how Versus or NBC will get many Bruins games on TV.

Caps, Bruins, Ducks and 'Nucks

I think the real interesting contest is going to be between Malkin, Crosby & Ovechkin, and who comes out on top there. I am rooting for Malkin since he's the undeserved darkhorse. I just don't feel like Kunitz and Guerin are dependable enough this time of year. Lots of teams struggle in the first round and then glide. Not only has Bettman got to be excited about this match up, but just knowing he'll have one of the key stars of the league in the conf finals.

I think the Bruins v Canes can be a lot closer than people are thinking it will be. The Bruins are very top heavy on the blueline with Chara and then the ability drops significantly. A team with forward depth can give the Bruins issues. The key is the Bruins have to hold on to home ice. If they come out rusty in game 1 and split in Boston and then allow the Canes to match up top lines against their lesser blueline pairings in Carolina we might be seeing seven games in this series.

Other than forward depth I am not sure what I like about the Wings. I prefer the Ducks blueline, goaltending and special teams. I think ther interesting match up is the the Wings undersized know how (Datsyuk & Lidstrom) vs the brawn of the Ducks top line. Wings have to win that match up to make the Ducks lack of forward depth an issue.

It's the same with the Canucks as last series. I don't like the career post season numbers of a lot of their forwards, but enough are in contract years that I can look past it. Especially against an inexperianced Hawks team. As great a shut down center Palhsson is he won't give you the offensive output that Kesler will and I have to go with Vancouvers blueline and goaltending.

I haven't been following these playoffs very close at all but the NHL has to be shitting themselves over that Caps/Pens game tonight.

2 of their biggest stars going head to head and pulling DOUBLE hat tricks??

That's pretty awesome.

The Canucks are my favorite team as well. I finally had to decide on a team over the last couple of years because of my brother-in-law and went with the Canucks. Closest geographically to my hometown, brother-in-laws hometown, sweet ass uni's (especially when they're in their dark blue). Gotta love the Sedins, Luongo and I really like Burrows for some reason. Wish I could actually see them on TV occasionally. Plus i hate the Avalanche (for many years which is strange)

First time in 13 years two players on opposing teams got hat tricks in the same playoff game.

Surprisingly, I thought it would have been longer.

Tonight's Caps game was amazing to watch. I was at game 1 of this series and thought that one was great. I wish I'd been there tonight.

Extra awesome that they won. Let's see what they can do in Pittsburgh.

Caps have been in 7 playoff series' against the Pens where they have won the first game of the series. However, the Caps are 1 and 6 in those 7 games.

Geez, I'd just be stoked for them to get to the conference finals at least.

im looking forward to tonights canuck game. They were dismal in game 2 but i think they are going to come out flying like they did in every game against the Blues. The only thing im concerned about is Salo's injury - hes a real key piece of the blueline. D must tighten up to shut down players like Kane and Sharp.

Hot damn, that Caps game last night was AWESOME. Disappointed in the loss by the Caps. I would have loved to have swept the Pens because I hate them and Sidney so very much.

But, I can't complain about that game (well, maybe the piss poor second period because the Caps just got run the fuck over). Varlamov has been a BEAST so far. So much for him not being tested anymore.

Malkin showed up last night and holy hell he was awesome.

Too bad the refs apparently want this one to go a full 7 games. 2 penalties on the Pens and 8 (or maybe it was 7) on the Caps? I smell fish, and it ain't coming from my pants.

Until there is a player in the league that gets away with a penalty as dangerous as charging the way Ovechkin gets away with it, I don't think Caps fans have a complaint. And I say that as someone who loves the fact Ovie plays in the NHL and loves the way he plays. The ironic (and scary) thing is at least once a season Ovie looks like he's going to kill himself trying to hit a Penguin:

'08 on Malkin

Game 3 vs Orpik

He's going to end up with a Kevin Stevens type injury. The league would do him and itself a favor if they started calling some of these charging calls to protect him, one of the best damn things that has happened to this league in years.

Want to win playoff games, stop giving Green so much prime defensive time. After all, he's more Iafrate than Langway and the Norris votes have already been submitted.

Eventhough I am rooting for the Bruins you have to love the story the Canes have become. Jokinen and Samsonov off waivers, Pitkanen off the trash heap from Edmonton, Ward the leagues second least respected goalie who has won the Cup. I talked about the Bruins lack of blueline depth and I expected the Canes to score the goals they have, but WTF has happened the Bruins offence? No effort in game 3. This is not the way they are supposed to losing.

Wings Ducks has been great. Too bad by the time I was able to turn on game 4 it was pretty much decided. And I have barely seen any of the Hawks Nucks.

Just because they didn't call those, doesn't mean that they shouldn't have called others. I mean, I'd have been fine with the Orpik one being called a charge, but two penalties on a team in nearly 4 periods of hockey is a little preposterous, regardless of Ovi's propensity to charge.

I consider the 'nucks and hawks game tonight to be do or die for the canucks. Those dumb fucks need to play a full 60 mins tonight and realize that the "lets sit on our lead and defend" tactic does not work against that young hawks team.

When the canucks attack offensively for 3 straight periods, there are few teams they can't beat.
