seems the biggest difference of opinion in those comments was the biker's relative wisdom (or lack thereof) using his body to keep the obviously enraged suv driver from moving. tempering biking righteousness with a healthy sense of self-preservation is usally a good policy.

Yeah this kid isn't the guy you want as your poster boy for your next "Share the Road" campaign. He obviously was being a bit of a dick himself but still he doesn't deserve to be intimidated by a 2 ton moving vehicle by a road raged idiot.

Working in the cycling industry I have heard countless stories of people getting badly hurt and even killed by maniac drivers who simply rage at having to be slowed down even for 20 seconds to get around a couple of cyclists who are out for some exercise.

Most are courteous people who ride on the side of the lane, even though they have the right to the whole lane if they wanted. People get such a sense of entitlement of the road if they are inconvenienced one second of their drive to the Dairy Queen.

I definitely think the one guy had a valid point by saying that everyone was being a bit melodramatic (by posting pictures of Tianamen), but the second he tries to validate his opinion with how he used to ride with critical mass when he lived in Williamsburg pretty much made me want to buy an SUV so I could run him over with it.

obviously, people in cars need to be more mindful of anyone on a bike. People on bikes need to be more conscious of people on foot. Pretty much everyone needs to be more conscious of everyone else.

and that the dude in the SUV was waaaay in the wrong. But the response from some of those posters is absurd. There are plenty of fuckwit cyclists, too. Less than fuckwit motorists, sure, but I'm willing to bet that it's somewhat proportional

Also, we've had this conversation at LEAST 3 times since 2006.

I feel bad for cyclists because what they do is dangerous and they are one less car on the road, but dammit if they don't make it hard to like them when they are constantly breaking every imaginable law of the road. Obviously not all cyclists, but a whole lot of them.

everyone says that, but other than rolling through stoplights and signs, what laws do cyclists constantly break?

when i go out and actually stop at redlights or signs, drivers often wave me through. but i still can't assume every driver is so courteous.

I feel like cyclists in Philly are especially dicknosed. It might just be because there are some narrow-ass streets in Philly, but then there are almost always nearby parallel bike routes that could be used.

in new york: riding on the sidewalk, without a helmet, wrong way on a one-way street, at night without a light, and through a crowded crosswalk against the light.

Yeah I've gotten this a few times, especially south of the river in Boston Proper. We'll be riding in file, at the far right of the lane right up against the side mirrors of parked cars, and have people honk or yell as they swerve 2 feet to their left *still within their own lane*. All because they had to apply slight pressure to the steering wheel.

I've also gotten "THERE'S A BIKE LANE RIGHT THERE!!!" and what they're pointing at is the sidewalk, which is illegal for me to ride on.

We were riding back from Davis Sq sunday night, riding along in the bike lane, and some lazy fuck had parked their car 4 feet from the curb, which means their car was blocking the entire bike lane. Normally when I see this, I shove their side mirror forward as I ride past, so that when they get back in to their car they see it and realize they just illegally parked in the bike lane (cops are horrible about ticketing for this, and the mayor's announced he's going to start training them on it, by the way). They just pull it back into place... all mirrors hinge like that. Well this time my wife pushed it forward as she rode past and it broke off in her hand - it had obviously been glued back on. On the one hand we felt bad - I wasn't trying to make somebody re-glue their shit back together again, but on the other hand, don't park in the goddam bike lane. It's illegal. It makes me swerve out into traffic.
