Here's what I would call Essential Canadian Indie, at least in the sense that these 25 albums give a concise, fairly expansive history of the, um, genre. Probably forgetting a pile of stuff that will come to me later.

I think this is another one of those areas where "what exactly is indie rock in the first place?" comes into play. I'd consider many of the discs on your list to be more punk than indie rock, hence the exclusion of any DOA or Dayglo Abortions from my list.

Can't comment on the relative merits of waltzie's list, he has a point.

Sure, but the point is that these labels are bogus in the first place. I don't make any harsh differentiation between rock and punk, and I never will. I may draw a line between punk and mall punk, but rock/indie/punk/pop/power pop/alternative/alt.anything are all fair game in this particular list IMO.

i don't think the labels are bogus. and while i agree that punk is a cousin/offshoot/sub-genre of rock i don't think the two are interchangeable. A "Essential Rock Records of the 70s" list could probably include the Clash and Ramones, but if one were making a "Essential Punk Records of the 70s" list would they include Toys In The Attic or A Night At The Opera? i don't think so.

I had more trouble with this one as there's a handful of albums on here that I don't like, but I can still respect that they're considered important or influential by other people.

Once again, discuss and debate.

The Arcade Fire – Funeral
Broken Social Scene – You Forgot It In People
Caribou – Andorra
Jason Collett – Motor Motel Love Songs
Constantines – Shine A Light
The Dears – Gang Of Losers
Death From Above 1979 – You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine
Gordon Downie – Coke Machine Glow
Eric’s Trip – Love Tara
Final Fantasy – Has A Good Home
Jim Guthrie – Now, More Than Ever
Hayden – Elk-Lake Serenade
Hot Hot Heat – Make Up The Breakdown
The Lowest Of The Low – Shakespeare My Butt
Metric – Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?
The Organ – Grab That Gun
Plants And Animals – Parc Avenue
The Rheostatics – Whale Music
The Sadies – Favourite Colours
Thrush Hermit – Clayton Park
Tokyo Police Club – Elephant Shell
Chad VanGaalen – Infiniheart
Patrick Watson – Close To Paradise
The Weakerthans – Left & Leaving
Wolf Parade – Apologies To The Queen Mary

I probably don't have enough albums of this genre to make a 25 essentials list, but whatever number I could come up with would probably include (among those not yet mentioned)...

The Pursuit of Happiness - Love Junk
Martha & the Muffins - Metro Music
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift your Skinny Fists...
54-40
The Nothern Pikes - Big Blue Sky
The Grapes of Wrath - Now & Again
The Three O'Clock Train - Wig Wam Beach
Deja Voodoo - Swamp of Love
The Cowboy Junkies - The Trinity Sessions

Early 70s group of Canucks, kind of a cross between Procol Harum and Artful Dodger. They had a hit with the ballad "Make Me Do Anything You Want". If you can find downloads for any of their 3 albums, send 'em along to me.

So you like this more than Wrong? I've never heard that EP. Do you know of a good place to find it? Is it on a comp now?

So, basically, if you put out some music on an independent label in Canada you qualify for this genre?

No idea where you can find it. Maybe it's tacked on to the CD re-ish of Mama? I bought the vinyl when it was first released and NoMeansNo were still a Victoria bar band, and so I'm predisposed to prefer it to their later stuff. There's a song on it called "Try Not To Stutter" that I think is the best thing they ever did - although I can understand others disagreeing.

Needs some DOA and NoMeansNo. I'll suggest "War on 45" and "Wrong".
