Next iPhone to Easily Record, Edit and Share Movies?

posted by arn on Friday May 01, 2009 01:43 AM
Considering all the leaked evidence of video recording and editing in the iPhone 3.0 beta, it's not really a stretch to predict that the next iPhone will offer long-requested video features. Still, Businessweek's Peter Burrows confirms that to be the case based on a source familiar with Apple's plans for the next iPhone.

In fact, Burrows suggests that video recording won't simply be an afterthought but a major feature of the new iPhone.

Evidently, shooting video is as easy as it is with a Flip, the ingenious device made by Pure Digital (recently purchased by Cisco). Then there's an iMovie app that lets you quickly save the sections you want, right there on the phone itself. There may also be support for MMS, so the clips can be shared wirelessly with friends. And because of the iPhone's relatively large screen, your friends donÂ’t have to schlep to your PC or their Facebook page to see that video of your kids or your safari. Just hand them your iPhone.

Burrows even suggests it could be as successful as Apple's late, yet dominating, entry into the MP3 market with the iPod. An easy to use video recording, editing and sharing iPhone could be a breakthrough usage for the device -- allowing people on a large scale to quickly record and share videos without bothering to connect to their computer.

For what it's worth, MacRumors has similarly heard that the next iPhone will support Video recording and YouTube sharing which has been supported by evidence found in the iPhone 3.0 beta.

is this the new OS, or next physical model?

in other words, will loading the 3.0 OS upgrade to my existing 3G enable video recording, or will it only be available on the next generation of phone (4G?)

I'm due for an upgrade on my cell phone via ATT. I'm looking at the iPhone, but honestly, I think it's much more bells and whistles than I would ever use. At this time, I think I may go with the Samsung Eternity. I've researched it pretty well and it seems to fit what I want at a much lower price. Anyone with personal experience with one of these?

I have only paid for Rolando and Tiger but both were worth it. For the record, I kept a BB as my phone and got an iPod touch.

So, you have pocket internet and all the apps on the touch, but you have a BB for a phone?

I was unaware that this was an option and really want to hear more.

You can put apps on the touch? I thought you'd need the data plan for most apps.

Ok, just upgraded to the 8MB 3G. A friend who has one raved about his and took me through some of the apps. Amazing. I just hope I'm tech-savvy enough to get my money's worth out of this thing. Also, I got a refurb and saved $100. Hope that was a good decision.

Holy shit! Is anyone as hopelessly addicted to geoDefense as i am? Seriously playing this little gem about 4 hours a day. I haven't been this addicted to a game in years.

If you have an iphone you NEED this game. There's a free version with enough levels to get you hooked, and the full version is like 2 bucks.

Say goodbye to your life.

I've been conpemtplating jailbreaking, but I can't find a good enough reason to do it. What's the advantage of having an iPhone that's jailbroken?

All I can find are answers like "Oh you can change your background" or "You can have 5 rows of apps per page rather that 4". If that's all it does, then I won't bother.

some things that i can do with jb

Image

this shows my lock screen, i have my calendar on there, as well as five icons that can be accessed without unlocking the phone (i.e. can answer calls, check mail, etc.)

Image

if i swipe across the top of the screen, it brings up SBSettings, which allows me to put my phone into airplane mode, turn off Bluetooth, hide icons, reboot or shut off the phone from this screen.

Image

one of my favorite apps is qTweeter. If i swipe my finger down from the top, this box drops down and allows me to tweet or post to FB without using either client, i can also upload a pic if im in the camera or a song if im in itunes.

all this may seem fairly frivolous, but for me it makes the phone about 100% more useful...also, i can use skype at the hospital, where i get 100% wifi coverage but no cell signal, and with Backgrounder it will stay open even when closed (native iphone apps are not allowed to run in the background). Also, Insomnia allows my phone to always get a wifi signal if in range, whereas the typical confirguration is to lose the signal when the phone is off, to save battery. Howver this way I can leave skype open and insomnia on and receive skype calls, which is a pretty big deal to me.

also, that little squiggly thing in the status bar of the first picture is my last.fm scrobbler which scrobbles in real time (something that I know FT wants) and without having to open a separate app, which is what the AppStore scrobbler requires.

I guess the key is that the jailbroken apps are able to integrate into the current structure, like Youtuber adds functionality to the Youtube app which allows you to save Youtubes to the phone, which is the kind of thing that Apple would never allow, they would require that it be a separate app, which is much less convenient.

So, no it wont end world hunger but it just might help me be a little more efficient.
