The Stone Roses' Debut Album Gets Deluxe Reissue Treatment

Image

The Stone Roses' 1989 self-titled album, a record that's often heralded as one of the greatest debut albums of all time, is set for a major resurrection this summer. On August 11, Silvertone/Legacy will deliver a deluxe 20th anniversary reissue of The Stone Roses in three different packages.

First, there's a single CD "Special Edition" containing the original album, remastered by Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown and producer John Leckie. It contains the original album as well as with the full-length version of "Fools Gold". Then there's a 2xCD plus DVD "Legacy Edition" containing the original album plus a bonus disc of demos plus the Live in Blackpool concert film, shot in 1989.

Finally, there's the mammoth "Collectors Edition", containing everything in the "Legacy Edition" as well as three LPs containing the original album and 13 non-album tracks. Oh, and a 2 GB USB drive shaped like a lemon (you know, like the album cover) containing "all the audio, promo videos, ringtones, wallpapers, plus previously unseen John Leckie home video footage of the recording of "Fool's Gold'," according to a press release. Not to mention a book featuring photos and musings from the band and their cohort as well as people like Noel Gallagher and Mark Ronson. AND six art prints painted by guitarist John Squire for the covers of the album's singles.

Whew. That's a lot of Stone Roses.

I like this album OK and really dig a couple of the songs a lot, but I have never understood why the level of praise it gets is so through the roof.

It's a great album; top 5 of that decade, for sure. But certainly nowhere near "Greatest Ever".

Also, I hate getting demo/live/alternate versions of songs that are already on the disc that I'm buying. It's so damn redundant. I much prefer stuff like what they give you on the 3rd disc there... at least that expands the scope a little bit.

That said, for my money, the best non-album SR collection is still this one:

I do like that they kept the album as is for disc one and put extra stuff on other discs. I hate when the clutter up the actual album with a bunch of demos or outtakes or whatever.

i don't mind when they clutter up the disk, but I wish there was a buffer, some kind of pause at the end to let you know the actual album is over.

Kinda like on "Full Moon Fever" when they do that whole, "hello CD listeners" thingy

punk rock production suits certain things, this record is certainly not punk rock or even close...its the same old dated 80s record with shitty trebley guitar and gated reverb drum sound. Second Coming sounds like a freight train compared to this one.

also, how many fucking times are they going to re-release this fucking record...they might as well give it away with shampoo samples.

The Stone Roses called "punk rock"...I can't believe I'd ever agree with Dave about anything, but that's just as absurd as calling their debut the greatest album ever recorded. Are you sure you've even listened to this album before? If so, are you sure you've ever listened to punk?

the production definitely suits the album & the band & the scene for the time it was released. i actually enjoy it a thousand times more than the overproduced Second Coming.

uh, and if you read the above you would realize that it's the 20th anniversary reissue, and it's finally getting a proper remastering.

you're very whiny lately Dave.

It wouldn't be Dale without hyperbole.

that's an honest, no-bullshit question...i know very little about the stone roses and even less about that particular record. time-and-place phenomenon? superb songcraft?

some of it is time and place but it's a hard thing to pin down. Realize Dale's being Dale in calling it the greatest album ever. It's a drug album without a doubt but that was never part of the allure for me, and it's my favorite record. Great songs that pretty much crystalized most of the best parts of the movement going on at the time.
FWIW, if I'm given a key to a time machine and can use it only once to visit one time/place, it's mid-late '80s Manchester. This record (and the movie "24 Hour Party People") is the next best thing.

If you watch the Brit Pop documentary Live Forever it has footage of the massive show they did (knebworth?) where kids pretty much stopped caring about the music, they just went to get high.

e and coke makes you like high end...unless you're me.
