so it looks like i'm headed here over memorial day weekend.

anybody have any suggestions for affordable lodging that's 1) not a Super 8, and 2) provides at least a modicum of interesting ambiance?

You should probably bring your own bedding.

Well, you didn't ask about Sausalito. Are you looking more for a romantic getaway weekend for two?

I've been to Sausalito but never stayed there. In other words, I'm of no help. Generally, when I go to SF, it's a quickie overnight stay or an extended weekend. Depending on who I'm with and what I'm up to, I'll stay near the Embarcadero Center or Fisherman's Wharf.

The hotel I recommended, The Argonaut, is a boutique hotel right next door to Giardarelli Square, walking distance from the cable cars, Fisherman's Wharf and has a decent restaurant/bar. As its name suggests, the theme is nautical and quaint. I've stayed there a couple of times and have always received nice service.

I like all of the Kimpton Hotels, so I'd imagine this is a good choice (I love their Hotel Monaco in Chicago). This is where I stayed last time in SF: http://www.nobhillhotel.com Might be a bit less expensive than the Argonaut and not quite as sharp, but it feels like a big b&b.

You could always shack up with someone from the Tenderloin, but you probably need to pay them in gay sex or crack.

I've only been there for work a couple of times and I usually stayed down in the Embarcadero area in some shithole. Most of the hotels down there are pretty expensive.

Check out the Mission. It's got some pretty good bars, restaurants, and nightlife.

Check out this thread:

http://www.obner.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t ... sc&start=0

Fair amount of blather in those first couple of pages but there are some good SF suggestions sprinkled in there. Note fancypants's comments.

Had a good meal here: http://www.lunaparksf.com/

It's in the Mission.
