Saw it Saturday, and it was as great as I'd heard. Superb casting throughout, but McCoy was the best.

The guy who plays Kirk is the real-life son of Getraer from CHiPs, I shit you not.

McCoy and Simon Pegg as Scotty were definitely the best.

Spock was probably my least favorite. It didn't help to put him side by side with Leonard Nimoy, either.

Supposedly Kumar was hidden in this somewhere, but I didn't catch it because I've never seen those movies.

It's like Leonard Nimoy said on Weekend Update, "If the trekkies don't like it, well, they're dickheads!"

I thought the movie was brilliantly cast and the story was seamless. While watching I was racking my brain with, ok this was in this movie and that was from that episode and so on. Overall it's a winner.

Saw it twice over the weekend. Only one of two minor aspects didn't really work for me, but the rest was great. The high points were so high that the rest didn't really matter.

Notice my careful choice of the word "hidden".

The guy who plays Harold is obviously in a starring role and is therefore not "hidden".

The guy who plays Kumar is supposedly "hidden" in the background in one scene.

Saw this last night. It was okay.

(shrugs)

LOL-worthy:

Winona Rider

Uhura and Spock making out

I thought this was funny, if it's true.

So you've got a problem with Winona Rider being in this movie, but not Tyler fucking Perry?

She did fine. It's not like she had a lot of screen time anyway.

The Spock and Uhura thing... ? It was worked into the story kind of weirdly, but it was hardly lol-worthy.

That Shatner thing is obviously bullshit.

Eh, I've never liked Rider. I think she helped ruin that last Alien movie. Unforgiveable.

Honestly, I didn't even notice Tyler Perry.

That love romance between Spock and Uhura was definitely forced. There was no reason to throw that in the movie. On of the writers must of said, "This movie has everything...but you know, the only thing that's missing is a blossoming love romance. Quick! Let's hook up a young Spock with someone! Chicks will dig that!"

highly illogical

She was not a tenth of what ruined that movie. Remember Sigourney Weaver playing basketball or diving into a VAT OF ALIENS.

just saw it last night. . .

agreed. has it really come to this? how about you have a 60-year-old play a 60-year-old? not a 40 yr old with a creepy tony robbins grin.

but yeah, i thought it was good. it was pretty canny of abrams to do the "past has been altered so future is different" trick so he has a legit out of making dogmatic asides to the original series/movies. even if it does wreak of lost.

i thought the movie had great pacing. . . never dragged nor did it get all up in your grill like a lot of summer action flicks. i knew the lens flares and blown out colors were coming and was happy they didn't overwhelm the film like i thought they might. ridley scott, eat your heart out.

i was also pleased to see (with one obvious exception) to see a relatively product-placement-free summer movie. i'm sure there are exception in there somewhere but other than the nokia moment i don't recall any other brand names.

best comment of the night: "no young spock, you continue with the starfleet. i'll go back and repopulate the planet!" old spock ftw!

runner-up: "looks like the future needs white balance"

saw it last night. i thought it was real good and i'm definitely not a star trek fan. scotty and bones were great.

but yeah, i thought winona ryder was miscast...what neuro said.

i thought the beastie boys song was kind of awkward and made it seem more commercial but my buddy was saying they put it in for shatner's mispronunciation of sabotage. heh.

also, was that wesley crusher on the kelvin?

just to follow up. . . straight from the horse's mouth. . . he wasn't written into the script but was offered a consultant role. he wasn't interested in it, presumably because it didn't pay well. no on set shenanigans and he even had the cast over for some horse-related event so all is good.
