and claire? i definitely am buying into the idea that the shack was the man in black's prison until the ash circle was broken. makes sense that that was where christian and claire were hanging out way back when.
I don't remember if we see when the circle of ash gets broken (was it when Hurley running away?), but I'm pretty sure it was intact at some point, and we see Christian walking around the island as early as season 1 (in one of the first episodes). If the man in black was stuck in the cabin at this time, then that probably wasn't him.
If the cabin wasn't Jacob's, why did Ben take Locke there? I guess when Locke heard Jacob say, "Help me," it might have been this man in black all along.
1. I thought the "man in black" was smokey? If that's the case, I didn't think he was locked up anywhere. In fact, my assumption was that somehow the man in black managed to trap Jacob in that cabin while he tried to find his loophole to kill him, so once the ash was cleared, Jacob could leave and then hide from the man in black.
2. I thought the reason that chick and all those dudes with Locke's body in the box went to the cabin was because Jacob was supposed to be trapped in there (not the man in black). Then they noticed that the ash was gone and she went and found the "clue" about Jacob being at the statue.
3. I am pretty sure we saw that ash get cleared like it was, I just don't remember when or by whom.
