Has the board sufficiently redeemed itself now?

Also, Chilliwack?

definitely, i probably got pissy a little too soon. One reason i wanted to do this thread on this board as theres such a wide range of bands that people choose, very interesting. On my classic rock forum, its so predictable - everybody listing the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, Led Zeppelin, etc.

Yeah Chilliwack has penned some great tracks. Very underrated band. Their albums as a whole arent all that great, but they really have quite a few classic songs.

as for Disturbed, yeap, a metal band with great hooks and interesting lyrics. Im not much into metal, but i admit that some nu metal has clicked with me.

Quarterly post by Harry about a lost golden era of music and cultural reproduction:

1. Of course this is an asinine exercise.
2. The construct of "band" has lost power since the 60's and 70'a when a "group" had a kind of implied cultural impact... and was without question a "sum is greater than its parts" reality (keith/mick, john/paul...Steven/Neil/David... ). The 80's post-punk enviroment became a front person backed by a band, and the 90's saw it all mostly devolve into "brand." (With exceptions like Pearl Jam...et.al.) The synergy of mixed members was the vehicle that carried the sound, the import, the impact of the "group" before devolution. The Who are the great example...each of the four were crucial to it being the Who and potentiated all of the other three exponentially.
3. As Dump Jack points out, a single singer is not a group. One usually call Billie Holiday or Jeff Buckly, oh, I don't know, an artist.

Ok, now I'll get more coffee. Sorry, yesterday was a hugely exhausting day except for the Ariza steal.

When people say "name your favorite bands" I generally take that as a call to "name your favorite artists", solo included, especially when that is conducive with the example given at the start.

Yeah, I don't think we're chained to the strict definition of "group" or "band" here. But if semantics is yer thing, go ahead.

those with the faucets continually on intrigue me the most, for a variety of reasons. i define my most admired artists more on prolificacy, and less on which artists are technically or intuitively "good" (a gauge which is always in flux and tends to depend on an ever-dynamic set of parameters).

while fulling expecting a slag on quality control, here are my tops in no particular order:

mark e. smith
bob dylan
hasil adkins
frank zappa
johnny cash
billy childish
jim o'rourke
queen
rolling stones
jandek (flame on, board)

i'm sure i'm missing some that are more prolific, but they all escape me right now

edit: robert pollard should probably be on there somewhere

If I had more Headcoats/Childish I'd probably be here as well.

And I just realized I actually listen to Young Fresh Fellows more than the ten that were on my list.
