VIRGINIA MAN BEERDRINKER OF THE YEAR Tom Ciccateri proved that the fourth time may be the charm when he was chosen Beerdrinker of the Year during finals competition in Denver. Ciccateri, who lives in Alexandria, Va., edged Richard Pedretti-Allen, a McKinney, Texas recording producer and two-time Beerdrinker of the Year finalist, and Fred Pelon, a Longmont, Colorado disc-drive engineer, for the title. Wynkoop Brewing Co. has hosted the competition annually since 1996. "There's a load lifted off my shoulders," Ciccateri said after winning the crown. "I've had my eye on the prize for a long time, it's great to finally win it." Ciccateri has tried more than 2,500 beers in 30 countries, has visited 321 breweries, and attended 95 beer festivals. "And I'm still on my original liver," he said. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-002490.php
UNDERAGE DRINKING PROTEST TAKES WRONG TURN A lobbyist whose goal is to cut back underage drinking in Oregon ran into a little trouble last month ... for handing out free beer to minors. Howard Scaman was trying to generate publicity for increasing Oregon's beer tax, primarily as a way to keep alcohol out of the hands of teens. He and others in "Dime A Drink" coalition of activists held a news conference and then visited state representatives' offices to pass out beer. The 12-pack cartons were labeled with $4.99 price tags to illustrate how Oregon's beer tax makes the alcoholic beverage an affordable "gateway" that leads to alcohol abuse problems. "Most legislators have no idea how cheap beer is," said Scaman, who left a half-case of beer cans with a legislative staff member. The problem was that many lawmakers' offices are staffed by interns who aren't yet 21 - which left Scaman open to charges of furnishing alcohol to minors, said Rusty Wolfe, a senior trooper with the Oregon State Police assigned to security in the Capitol. Rather than cite Scaman, Wolfe made what he called an "educational contact," explaining to Scaman that he must halt the beer giveaway. http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-002473.php
BEER 101 AT MAINE COLLEGE Students at Colby College in Maine can sit down most Friday nights and sample two beverages found in few college dining halls: beer and wine. The program started in the fall, initiated by the Student Government Association. It's intended to teach students to drink in moderation while showing an alternative to the binge drinking that is common on college campuses. On three Friday nights during the fall semester, alcohol was available with dinner for students 21 and older. They pay $1 per drink and are limited to two. It's been such a success that college administrators decided to expand it to most Friday nights during the spring semester. "I think people have appreciated it because it's a good way to show that alcohol can be handled in a good and responsible manner," said Janice Kassman, the school's dean of students. "We've had only good comments." http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-002474.php
And my favorite:
MAN LOSES JOB - APPARENTLY FOR DRINKING BUD LIGHT The battle between the world's largest beer makers - Anheuser-Busch and SABMiller - got personal last month for a Wisconsin man when he lost his job. Isac Aguero, 24, said he was fired the same day a picture appeared in The Journal Times showing him holding a bottle of Bud Light. The picture was taken while Aguero was out in downtown Racine during Mardi Crawl, and appeared as part of the Journal Times weekly "On the Town" feature depicting area nightlife. Aguero was a forklift operator for CJW Inc., the area's distributor of Miller Brewing Co. products. He said he believes he was fired unfairly. "It was a Saturday and I wasn't at work," he said. "They can't tell me what beverages I can drink." http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-002469.php
