Normally, I'd jump all over this. But that solo Armstrong album was so bad that I'm suspicious of this.

cats,

Based on a myspace listen, this is onpar with the last record. They're kind of phoning it in these days. Some weird 60s influences show up, though.

I'll still prolly buy it, just cuz they were an important band to me 10 years ago and I'm sort of a completist.

Wait, is the METAL guy who hangs out with these 13 year old kids at the Cookie Monster show telling us what's what? I'll trust your opinion then, although I thought your knowledge of 13 year olds was limited to the pre-Vivid/Anabolic sets.

This just sounds like regular rock to me. I don't even know what punk is.

Yeah i'm puzzled by this too. That's the album that renewed my interest in rancid. Cotton's is the first negative statement I've ever seen about that album. I get that its not for everyone (not that anything is) but for ska, its really qual and I would have expected that anyone not inclined to like ska would have stayed away to begin with.

i guess there's nothing at all in here that interests me.

0 riffs
0 memorable moments
dudes voice sucks
i was more annoyed after listening to it than anything else
it just sounds dumb to me

after seeing the raves in here, i had to check it out....and was let down.

i enjoy the tim armstrong solo thing mainly because it brings back the memory of bosswilleatyou referring to it as "black people music"

the best thing about bands like this (and most of my fave bands) is that the rhythm geetar is more important to the feel and overall flow/sound of the band than "riffs."

Its just good 03CGR.

I don't know, I only gave it 2-3 listens, but if just sounded largely to me like "Everlast discovers roots/ska".

Part of it is that ska, which a few exceptions/variations is pretty much a dead genre to me post-1980 or so. Part of it is that Matt Freeman's bass is such a compliment to his voice that I was waiting for that tokick in. Part of it might be that he can't really sing. Part of it might be that Armstrong tends to get oddly wistful and didactic when neither really suits him that well.

I think it's really a hard thing to do when, after having a punk career all your life, you try to switch up and issue a toned-down personal statement in a new genre. This happened to me with the Malin albums, too. The only real Punk guy that pulled this off that comes to mind (I'm sure I'm missing many examples) is John Doe, and you could argue that X was never really all that punk rock to begin with.

The albums are never terrible, but they just sound generic and flat to me. Just a personal preference. I know everyone really enjoyed that record, which is fine. I didn't.

The Armstrong solo disc is what made me interested in Rancid for more than an occasional single that sounded good for being on the radio kinda thing. But, I've always liked reggae and ska and always will. Rancid's appeal to me is the whole I love the Clash, punk rock and Jamaican music vibe that pretty much puts me squarely in their target audience.

And yeah, I know punk and ska and all that is supposedly dead and not in fashion, but I've been listening to that shit my whole life and when I started listening it wasn't in fashion either so I'm not gonna stop now.

i'm listening to their myspace. i'm not sure what tracks are on the album though. some of the songs are okay and i'm sure 26 year old me would enjoy it enough but i was never a huge rancid fan to begin with. it doesn't flat out suck but it's just kinda blah.
