... i should let you hear it.

9/21/08

both of my bands which were doing well around town break up. Both were almost done with albums which i was very proud to be a part of. Both of those reels of tape are gathering dust. Poor People's album will probably never see the light of day. The Nasty Rumors are effectively done, but i'll re-record my songs which are the majority of the album. Don't know if I should do it with friends, or all by myself playing everything. It's a trust issue at this point. Not just with other people, but with myself.

11/08

I join The Black as their bassist. This has been the longest stretch i haven't been in a band that i can recall. I join The Something Ain't Rights (engineer/owner from Sweatbox Studios' band) and bring along the drummer from Poor People. I join J.C. and Co as their bassist (drummer and guitarist from The Black are already in it). I join Monarch Box as bassist for a short time and contribute alot to their soundtrack for a skate video for Red Bull. That partnership concluded during SXSW.

5/2-3/09
The Black goes into Sweatbox. We recorded 10 tunes. What was wild was that we

1. recorded live, no overdubs
2. that included all vocals
3. which we did with out any headphones
4. there were guests and friends on every single track, they learned the songs on the spot.

this made for a fun, drunken, raucous time, we couldn't hear a damn thing we were singing, we just hoped for the best. Also, our friends were looking to us for visual cues as to when to change chords. It was tiring and insane.

We didn't touch the reel till this Thurs., did some rough mixes.

I kind of want to share some or all of it, but I also kind of want to wait until it's all done.

Chad heard it once through yesterday as I did a Costco run with him, but it definitely sounds better louder. Then after I was done helping him with groceries, i went back to the studio, and mike did some different mixes.

Regardless, eventually i'll put it up for your consideration, mastication, and probable vilification.

In my super-limited experience, I find that nearly impossible. Especially with all the guests. Maybe you've got something magical. Really looking forward to hearing it.

Keep in mind I'm totally in the tank here since Phil's one of my best friends - but I also don't hold back when I'm not feeling something he's working on, as I do/did regularly with one of the bands mentioned above.

That said, even in a rough form that's probably 80% toward being a finished record this thing is a whole lot of fun and in lots of spots it just straight-up cooks. I won't say too much more, other than I'm really looking forward to hearing it all the way done. Which means you better do your damnedest to get me a copy before you skip out of town for San Diego in a couple weeks, you sonofabitch.

It probably won't be done before San Diego. It'll probably have to wait till august when i get back, or they'll have to work on it while i'm gone. I think we should cut the vocals again, if only because the bleed from the vocal mics results in some destructive interference causing instruments to drop in volume.

Upping to two different mediafire folders.

The 1st round is an attempt at mono, lot of 60s worship as far as recording goes, and they love their old mono records. So do I.

The second round is slight guitar separation in panning, bumped up drums, bass a little round and less scooped out and more present in the mix. The instrumental versions are to illustrate to the band members how taking those vocal mics out of the mix cleans up every single instrumental track.

My guess is that they'll want to scrap all of these and record in a larger space at Sweatbox in the hopes of less vocal bleed and destructive interference. I'd rather keep these takes and cut the vocals again.

Anyhow, it's all conjecture at this point.

Links to follow.

And not to nitpick, but I call bullshit on this thread title. No way The Black + guests got down like Bone Thugs back in the day.

I was just a session guy.

Yeah, I saw some wild things. I was not a part of those wild things.

o.k., so i put all 21 tracks into one playlist and sorted by title. The cancellation that occurs in the first round is pretty dramatic to me, but admittedly, i'm really close to the songs.

I listened to the first song, and it was good. Reminded me of early Old 97s and Fake Problems. This is really in my wheelhouse so I might not be the best critic for it. I plan on listening to the rest of it at some point, and I'll give you more feedback then.

I was having trouble too grabbing the single files as well. Maybe first off, just dump everything to a folder and zip or rar that to mediafire. It's usually a pretty reliable site for links.

Zip files. First round is a cursory mix of the album as it stands at the moment

2nd round is some alternate mixes and some mixes sans vocals to illustrate the destructive interference from the lead vocal mic's bleed.

I like the alternate mixes better.

i've DL'd 3 tracks of the first mix so far, including love don't.

this reeks of fun and i imagine there was plenty of booze to grease the wheels. singer sounds spot on 99% of the time, and the other players sound top notch as well.

big fan of the original mixes, but i haven't spent time with the alternates. i'd be curious to know what kind of micing config you used. whether intentional or not, it sounds like the good old days of ribbon mics and AM radio

it probably sounds like i'm gushing, but i've been in plenty of projects that have tried this scenario and walked away with utter shite. i'll give the rest of the tracks some more listens and maybe i'll come up with some constructive crit to throw your way
