Murray Street and Sonic Nurse are two of the best albums of this decade but I felt there was a drop off in quality with Rather Ripped which good as it was wasn't at the level of the other two.

Was Jim O'Rourke essential to the rebirth of Sonic Youth perhaps?

Not heard the new one yet, I'll buy it the day it comes out.

FWIW, I think "Murray Street" is their best effort this decade but it's close with the others.

I think it blows the others away, but I haven't actually listened to NYC Ghosts & Flowers in a really, really long time.

Looking forward to this. I may buy it, just like I've bought nearly all of their albums.

I think it's hard to shit on SY, but I also think Kingfish has a good point in that every album they put out is hailed as a triumphant return and then it quietly i forgotten about. I don't know how they've done in the shmoo polls historically, but I'd be surprised if any of them have cracked the top 40.

end result for me is that they've become a remarkably consistent band, and you usually have a good idea of how much you're going to enjoy their albums, even if their style has morphed a bit over the years.

I think his joining and subsequent leaving were both essential to the band's growth.

Cheers.

This is pretty good so far.

Maybe just 'cause I'm on a bit of a Sonic Youth kick lately.

Yeah I listened on the commute this morning and thought it was good too. Need more listens for a full assessment.

Will have to listen at work tomorrow. Dnld'd last week. Haven't been into anything of there's since Murray St.

I thought Sonic Nurse sucked. Rather Ripped was a good noise-pop record, but I never feel the need to listen to it.

Well, exactly. And this is the mark of a mature artist. It's kinda amazing that they are continuing to put out good music decades after they started. I can't think of another band that I can count on putting out something interesting, but different, with every release. The heroin noise punks have achieved consistency and reliability at this late stage of their journey.

I like several of their 00's releases... and so far this one is the best of them all (with possible exception of Murray Street).

Will wait to listen til actual release, due to my tradition with them. However, I will say that I'm expecting pretty big things from this album.

I'm going to agree. Its boring to pick up rags and read websites that use the same cliched stories release after release. Its lazy journalism and reviewing.

That said, name other bands 20-some years in that are still putting out consistently good records without interruption. There's only a handful at best. I still have fun at their shows, and still listen to their records with a great deal of frequency.
