TVotR's "Wolf Like Me" released today. I'm much more excited about this than is appropriate.

That is all.

we've probably covered this into the ground over the last 4 years or whatever but:

- I can respect that dj'ing may not be easy, and that I may not even be able to do it, but
- Even being the world's best dj does not make you a musician, in and of itself.

It's just a different kind of skill. Collage artists are not painters. Dj'ing appears to require some musical skill, especially regarding rhythm, but if you aren't producing anything (insert argument about piecing other peoples' things together qualifying or not here) then you aren't a musician to me.

Is it possible for me to express that feeling without you thinking that it means I don't like or respect dj's? Try not to confuse the two, in all seriousness. I just categorize them differently.

you are incorrect.

musician defined: artist who composes or conducts music as a profession.

a DJ is a composer. so yes, a DJ is a musician.

a tool for those interested in "composing" a piece of music.

this is the part where I get lost, either because

1. dj's don't in fact compose anything in the traditional sense you're quoting (ie, write down notes for other people to play) - they just arrange pieces of recordings played by other people, or
2. because I don't know enough about what they actually do.

DJ is a pretty broad term, isn't it? I mean, John Peel was a DJ. But then so is Radar.

I know sweet FA about most electronic music, but I would say that there are varying degrees of talent/originality in it.

no. they arrange pieces of music that have been created, composing a mix (or selection) of that music.

i might add, many DJ's create music themselves that they then use to compose a mix.

they are musicians. their equipment being the instrument.

Also, "Three Dimes Down" is awesome, but Lucinda William's "Can't Let Go" is even better. Both songs were released for RB on the same day, along with a track from Neko's new album.

That trailer was cool, I think I be more likely to try this game than DJ Hero...which sounds incredibly lame.

i'd like to check out the dj hero game.

There was a preview for it in last month's Game Informer. I wasn't interested in it before, but after reading the preview, it actually looks like it has some potential.

Colin will probably get pumped after he sees that DJ Shadow did a lot of the mixes.

I saw some DJ Hero-type arcade game in when I was in Korea last fall. Some fat dude was going nuts on it. I took some video of him on my camera, I think.
