giving this a first listen:

3 songs in...it's interesting for sure. i think i like this. i don't remember their first one sounding anything like this, but i do remember that i dismissed it pretty quickly.

either this thing is frontloaded with the good stuff, or someone slipped some ppdd-powder in my coffee this morning that has worn off. i wanted to strangle the lead singer by the end and couldn't even finish it. maybe i'll try again at a later date.

Thanks estone. I think Happy Pocket is the first Trashcan Sinatras album. It did get proper release in Europe but not the US and was out of print for a long time. I think its one of their weaker albums though. I like everything they've done though so I assume I'll like the new one. All their albums are pretty mellow though and take some listens to grow on me so if that's the case for this one its nothing unexpected.

yeah, definitely nothing unexpected here, but i just keep hoping for a standout single to jump out at me a la "obscurity knocks" or "hayfever". i'm sure more will reveal itself with repeated listens.

Yeah, I dunno. I've been waiting for them to even come close to "Obscurity Knocks" for (damn) 20 years. It's not gonna happen. This new one is nice 'n' all, but it sounds too fluffy and polite. I should burn it for my elderly relatives in the UK.

I like a lot of their mellower stuff more than I like Obscurity Knocks. It is indeed fluffy and polite but I've always been a sucker for stuff like that and early Aztec Camera.

Can you take the Japanese label off that album cover? I can't read the title.

unfortunately that was the only decent sized pic i found. Its Archie Shepp - On Green Dolphin Street. First listen -- pretty good but far too early for me to place where it belongs in his catalog.

The Accelerators

Debut full length from a bunch of kids from Rotterdam, playing catchy fast-paced punk tunes. Nothing original or anything, but a really good example of taking something simple and doing it right. A fun listen that I've played a bunch this year.

Digging the front porch vibe of this. Feels kind of tossed off and simplistic. The kind of thing that Elvis can write in his sleep but I'm liking it.

That Pitchfork hated it (3.8) makes me think I'll get some good enjoyment this year from this record.

You got a link for that, Derris?

This morning I've listened to the new Wilco and the new Sonic Youth. I need to get back in the np thread habit.
