The threads on Rancid and Social Distortion, made me think of Bad Religion.
I remember hearing a few tracks from "Suffer" and "No Control" before really getting into them with "Recipe for Hate". I think the last album I really listened to by them was "The New America. I just basically out grew them, plus my college education makes me dread most overtly political music.

There should probably be threads about NOFX and Pennywise too.

Never struck even a minor chord with me. I think I've read they were around pretty early in the 80s, but I never even noticed them for some reason then if they were and by the time I did hear 'em, I didn't get interested. Wouldn't recognize their sound if you blasted it in my ears right now.

Like Social D, a single here and there is good. As a whole, it gets way too samey.

I owned the tape of Against the Grain. I loved it and it was subsequently confiscated by my mother because of the band name and lyrics which were too much for her conservative soul, but not before the lyrics and fast tempo had engrained themselves into my adolescent brain. Pretty sure I re-bought the CD a little while later.

I also remember around this time I found out that my father was both a homophobe and lover of Rush Limbaugh after finding a letter he wrote to the producers of "Thirtysomething" declaring his boycott against the show because it dared to feature a gay character.

Bad Religion spawned countless imitators who are probably terrible, but also Brett Gurewitz who started not only Epitaph, but it's sister labels, Anti-, Hellcat and Burning Heart Records

great run of albums from the late 80s to early 90s. you don't need much else unless you are a completist.

They've managed to have a track or two on every album through their long history that I love, so even though full albums aren't tops with me, the band has been a fave since high school.

yeah, I can definitely agree with that. I'd life to give Suffer a retread, too.

But he was from Racine before Racine was scene. Proto-sceneasta Greg Graffin is the preferred nomenclature, then.

Also: would be curious if he's a Horlicker.

FUCK CASE HIGH-SCHOOL! COCK!

I hated how every mention of this band notes that the singer is a PhD candidate in biology or something, like that's supposed to be impressive or something or the lyrics should be somehow taken more seriously because he's been in academics.

Isn't that the same issue that some people have with the Descendents and The Offspring? If they were in "punk" bands, I'm sure the same would have been said about Tom Morello and Rivers Cuomo.

aren't similar anecdotes dropped into every article about the offspring, descendents, and even queen? well, maybe not queen so much.

edit: beaten by seconds.

I just read DESCENDENTS as Decemberists.

I fear the O3CGR posse is going to kill me now.

having a PhD and being a lecturer in paleontology at UCLA isn't impressive?

and (from what i've read) it's not about taking the lyrics seriously, it's about recognizing Gaffin has the capacity to write lyrics that are beyond a 4th grade reading level. it's part of what makes the band unique, not necessarily something that makes their message more meaningful than street punk slogans.

Maybe I've been in academics too long, but no, having a PhD and being a lecturer is not that impressive. Just because you have a graduate degree doesn't mean you're not a fucking idiot.

Creating art is impressive in and of itself.
